However you define adventure -- whether it's climbing onto the back of a mountain bike, hunting from the top of a tree stand or camping with the family a long way from nowhere -- CURT class 1 hitches provide a light-duty towing receiver to help you Bring It. Each is made to fit a specific vehicle, providing easier installation, a better fit and optimal towing capacity. Custom class 1 trailer hitches are available for a variety of smaller vehicle types, including the compact car, crossover, minivan and small SUV. This particular class 1 hitch is designed to be a custom hitch for certain years of the Ford Focus (to verify vehicle compatibility, see the CURT application guide at curtmfg.com). Tested in accordance with SAE J684, it offers a weight carrying capacity of 2,000 lbs. GTW and 200 lbs. TW. It is equipped with 1-1/4" receiver tube opening to accept a ball mount shank or other hitch mount. This class 1 hitch also comes with all necessary mounting hardware. With its lightweight design and smaller receiver tube size, a class 1 hitch is especially useful for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted bike rack or cargo carrier. They can also typically be used to tow small trailers such as a utility trailer, kayak trailer or teardrop camper (never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component; i.e. the vehicle, hitch, trailer, etc). Though CURT class 1 trailer hitches are only intended for light-duty towing, we apply the same principles of quality as we do to the rest of our rear mount hitches. Each class 1 hitch is made with hands-on engineering, high-strength steel and precise welding. We use a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat, inside and out, and durable black powder coat to provide a lasting defense against rust, chips and UV rays.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Ford Focus hatchback (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. You have a picture in mind of your next destination -- maybe it's the boat landing at your favorite fishing spot, maybe it's a campsite that overlooks one of nature's masterpieces, or maybe it's the next big jobsite. However, turning that picture into a reality takes more than just daydreaming. It takes a solid connection and the right amount of power. CURT custom wiring is made with some of the most sophisticated technology in the industry and is designed to install with ease, giving you a long-lasting electrical connection for your towing hitch setup.

Yes, CURT hitch 11431 is designed for 2013-present Ford Focus ST Hatchback models. Verify your vehicle year and body style (hatchback) match before purchasing.
The hitch is rated for a maximum of 2,000 lbs trailer weight and 200 lbs tongue weight when used as a weight-carrying hitch. You must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
The hitch is designed for use with ballmount #45521. Euro mount options are also available: #45571 (1 7/8" ball) and #45572 (2" ball).
Required tools are: ratchet, torque wrench, power drill, die grinder, 15/32" drill bit, 11/16" drill bit, 6" socket extension, 13mm socket, marker, and safety glasses. Proper tools will greatly improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
Yes, drilling is required. You will drill two holes (one on each side of the frame) using a 15/32" drill bit. The hitch is used as a template to mark drill locations. You will also need to enlarge existing access holes using a die grinder to allow 7/16" carriage bolts and SP7 spacers to pass through.
Yes. The first step is to remove four bolts and lower the two rear exhaust brackets. Return the bolts to the vehicle owner. The exhaust brackets are then repositioned during installation (step 7) and secured with M8-1.25 hex bolts and 3/8" conical toothed washers.
Torque all M8 hardware to 23 ft-lbs. Torque all 7/16" hardware to 70 ft-lbs. These specifications apply to both the M8-1.25 hex bolts and the 7/16"-14 carriage bolts.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation. Before you begin, read all instructions thoroughly. Periodically check the hitch after installation to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound.
Electrical wiring must be a minimum of 12 inches from the exhaust tips. The ballmount may become hot due to the center exhaust, so maintain this clearance to prevent damage to wiring.
CURT Manufacturing warrants this product to be free of defects in material and workmanship at the time of retail purchase by the original purchaser. If the product is found to be defective, CURT may repair or replace it at their option when returned prepaid with proof of purchase. Alteration, misuse, or improper installation voids the warranty.
Fishwire is a technique used to route the 7/16"-14 carriage bolts and SP7 spacers through the enlarged access holes and out the drilled holes in the frame rails. Two pieces of 7/16" fishwire are supplied with the hitch for this purpose. This technique allows you to position the hardware without removing the hitch.
Included hardware: (2) 7/16"-14 UNC carriage bolts (10-10282), (2) 7/16"-14 UNC serrated flange nuts (20-00103), (4) 3/8" conical toothed washers (30-00148), (2) 0.250 x 1.00 x 2.00" square hole spacers CM-SP7, (4) M8x1.25 hex bolts (10-10417), (2) spacers 11431-SP, and (2) pieces of 7/16" fishwire.
All non-trailer (wheel-less) loads applied to this hitch must be supported by 18050 stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. See the CURT catalog or visit www.curtmfg.com for further information.
Periodically check the hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing maintenance helps ensure safe operation and prevents loosening due to vibration during towing.

Electrical wiring must be a minimum of 12 inches from the exhaust tips. The ballmount may become hot due to center exhaust.
Yes, CURT part 56273 is designed for Ford Focus hatchback. The manual identifies this as a passenger car application (P-series). Confirm your vehicle is a hatchback model, as the installation procedure is specific to this body style.
The CURT 56273 is a custom wiring harness that connects to your vehicle's taillight assemblies. It includes a 4-flat connector for trailer use and a converter box. The harness is routed through the trunk and connects to the vehicle's existing taillight wiring.
You will need: 10mm socket, 1/4" socket, T-20 Torx bit, ratchet, panel trim removal tool, crimping tool, wire cutters, and a cutting tool. You will also need sealant (not included by CURT) to seal the grommet after routing the wires through it.
Yes. Step 1 requires you to locate the vehicle battery on the driver side under the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning any other work.
Open the tailgate and remove all trunk floor coverings and storage trays. Remove the rear scuff panel by removing push fasteners and pulling out at the bottom then up. On the driver side, remove two fasteners from the side trim panel, pull it back, then remove the taillight assembly fasteners. Gently pull the taillight rearward and out to access the connectors behind it.
Locate the grommet with wires running from inside the trunk to the taillight. Make a small slit in the grommet large enough to route the harness wires through. Route the wiring harness end with the yellow wire out through the grommet opening and through the slit. Insert the harness end with the yellow wire between the separated taillight connectors, ensuring the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Seat the grommet with the harness wires passing through.
The manual requires you to use a sealant (not included) to seal the grommet where the wires pass through and where the grommet was cut. The specific type of sealant is not specified in the manual; consult the vehicle manufacturer or a sealant supplier for a product suitable for automotive trunk grommets.
Drilling may be required. Step 9 instructs you to locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no existing screw is available, you must drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The manual warns to check for miscellaneous items hidden behind or under surfaces before drilling to avoid damage and personal injury.
The harness has two circuit ratings: signal circuits are rated at 3.0 amps per side, and tail/running circuits are rated at 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed these ratings or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed this rating, as exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
The harness includes a yellow wire (routed to the driver side taillight connector), a green wire (routed to the passenger side taillight connector), a white ground wire (secured to a grounding point with a ring terminal and provided screw), and a black power wire (routed from the vehicle battery). The 4-flat connector is used for trailer connection.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The manual does not specify whether this is on the driver side or passenger side; consult the included CME-PCL-INS sheet or contact CURT for clarification on the exact location.
After completing Steps 1–8 on the driver side, route the CURT wiring harness end with the green wire to the passenger side behind the removed scuff panels. Repeat Steps 4–8 on the passenger side using the harness end with the green wire. This mirrors the driver side installation process.
When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll it up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness functions properly. Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. Reconnect the negative battery terminal before testing.
Reinstall all items removed during installation, including the taillight assemblies, side trim panels, rear scuff panel, and trunk floor coverings and storage trays. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Do not exceed the product rating (signal circuits 3.0 amps per side, tail/running circuits 6.0 amps total) or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. Additionally, check for miscellaneous items hidden behind or under surfaces before drilling to avoid damage and personal injury.
