You will need: a ratchet, a torque wrench, a 22mm socket, a 6" socket extension, and a wire pipe brush. The wire brush is used to clean debris from the weldnuts in the frame. A tools reference guide is available at curtmfg.com/trailer-hitch-installation.
The kit includes 6 hex bolts (M14-1.50 x 40mm, CL 10.9) and 6 conical-toothed washers (9/16"). These fasteners mount the hitch to the vehicle frame weldnuts.
Yes. Step 1 of the installation requires you to lower the spare tire from inside the vehicle using the tools stored in the storage compartment. After the hitch is secured, you will raise the spare tire back into place following the same instructions.
Yes. Weldnut cleaning may be required. To remove debris from the weldnuts in the frame, spray lubricant or compressed air into the hole. For heavy debris, use a wire brush. Take care not to damage the threads. The manual notes this step in the assembly diagram and Step 2 of the installation.
All M14 bolts must be torqued to 139 lb-ft. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightening during installation.
The conical-toothed washers should be placed with the toothed side facing the hitch side plate. The assembly diagram on page 2 shows the correct orientation: the hex bolt passes through the washer, and the washer sits between the bolt head and the hitch side plate.
