The CURT 56419 is a powered converter lead and custom wiring harness system designed for SUVs and vans. It converts vehicle taillight signals to a 4-flat trailer connector, allowing you to tow a trailer with integrated lighting. The system includes a black converter box, custom wiring harness with color-coded wires (yellow for left turn, green for right turn, red for brake, brown for taillight), power lead, ground wire, and a 4-flat dust cover.
The CURT 56419 is designed for SUVs and vans. The manual shows representative wiring locations (S1–S10) for these vehicle types. For specific vehicle year, make, and model compatibility, consult the CURT fitment database or contact the manufacturer, as the manual does not list individual vehicle applications.
Yes. The converter system is designed only for 12-volt negative ground systems. If your vehicle uses a different electrical system, this product is not compatible.
You will need: ratchet, 10mm socket, socket extension, T-45 Torx bit, panel trim removal tool, cutting tool, wire crimper, wire stripper, and electrical tape. These tools are required to remove interior panels, disconnect fasteners, and prepare and connect the wiring harness.
The kit includes a black converter box, custom wiring harness with color-coded wires (yellow, green, red, brown), white ground wire with ring terminal, black power wire, provided ground screw, double-sided tape for converter box mounting, cable ties, 4-flat dust cover, and a 15-amp fuse holder. A 15-amp fuse must be installed after all other installation steps are complete.
Yes. You must disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. Secure this wire down and away from the battery during the installation process. Reconnect it only after all other steps are complete and the 15-amp fuse has been installed.
You must remove: all floor and rear cargo area coverings, place rear seats in the down position, remove two fasteners securing the floor support and cargo bins using a T-45 Torx bit, remove foam from the back of the vehicle, remove the rear scuff panel (using a 10mm socket to remove two cargo tie downs), and remove two cargo tie downs on the side walls just behind the rear seats. Use a panel trim removal tool to loosen the side wall plastic on both sides.
On the driver side, pull back the lower side wall to locate the vehicle taillight wiring connectors. Separate the connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring harness end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with the locking tabs in place. Repeat this process on the passenger side using the wiring end with the green wire.
Locate a flat, clean surface that is out of the path of spray and debris from the rear wheels and road. Mount the converter box using the provided double-sided tape. Failure to mount the box in a protected area can cause loss of warranty, product failure, overheating, and potential fire. The area must be free from rust, dirt, and paint.
You should first locate an existing screw or bolt in the vehicle frame near the converter box to use as a grounding point. If no suitable existing fastener is available, you may drill a 3/32" pilot hole. The area must be free from rust, dirt, and paint; use an abrasive pad or paper to clean it. Secure the white ground wire with the ring terminal on the existing fastener or with the provided ground screw. Always check for hidden items behind or under any surface before drilling to avoid damage and personal injury.
When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a new grommet, or use silicone to protect the power wire from sharp edges. This prevents damage to the wire insulation and potential electrical hazards.
Signal circuits (left and right turn): 5.5 amps per side. Tail/running circuits: 7.5 amps total. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
The power wire is 12 gauge (12 GA) or larger. Route this wire from the vehicle battery, taking care to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components.
Yellow = left turn signal, Green = right turn signal, Red = brake signal, Brown = taillight (running light). These color-coded wires connect to the vehicle's taillight connectors and transmit the corresponding signals to the trailer connector.
The maximum fuse rating is 15 amps. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp fuse. Install the fuse after all other installation steps are complete. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
When not in use, roll up the 4-flat connector and store it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse.
Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury. This is especially important when drilling the 3/32" ground hole or when routing the power wire through sheet metal.
Route the 12-gauge power wire to the vehicle battery location, taking care to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components. Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties. When passing through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a new grommet, or use silicone to protect the wire from sharp edges. Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before wiring the power wire.
After connecting the 12-volt power wire to the harness, verify that the harness is functioning by attaching the battery and testing with a test light, 4-flat tester, or a functioning trailer. This confirms that all signal circuits and power connections are working correctly before final use.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. This helps maintain proper function and prevent electrical hazards.
Yes. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion of the connector when it is not in use.
