They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Subaru Outback (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.
If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Subaru Legacy (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). Yes. Locate the vehicle's battery in the engine compartment on the driver side and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery while completing the installation. Reconnect the negative battery terminal after all other installation steps are complete.
The primary wiring locations are S1 (behind driver side taillight housing) and S2 (behind passenger side taillight housing). Additional optional locations include S3–S10 behind rear access panels, bumpers, and under the rear floor panel. The manual provides a diagram showing all ten possible wiring locations on a representative vehicle.
Open the trunk. Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen and remove the two taillight trim fasteners and remove the trim piece. Using a Phillips screwdriver or 10mm socket, remove the taillight fasteners. Remove the taillight by pulling straight rearward. Locate the vehicle taillight wiring connectors, which will be similar to those on the new converter product. Separate the connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Repeat on the other side of the vehicle.
Fishwiring is a method to push or pull an electrical wire through a blind hole. Insert a stiff wire (such as a cut-up wire hanger, rope or string) through the blind hole and locate it on the other side. Use tape to secure the harness to the fish wire and pull back up. If the fish wire or harness gets hung up, you may need to push back down, wiggle it around or twist the wire to loosen it. Make sure the fish wire is long enough to stick out on the other side.
On the driver side, route the fishwire down between the body and bumper cover. From under the vehicle, locate and attach the fishwire to the housing with the yellow wire. Pull the wire back up and attach it to the factory harness. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat on the passenger side with the green wire.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no suitable existing point is available, drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The area should be free of rust, dirt and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Route the green wire along the backside of the bumper cover. Use cable ties as needed to secure the routed wiring. Route the black power wire from the vehicle battery as shown on the provided Powered Converter Lead Instruction Sheet. Route the 4-flat to the trailer hitch and mount in an easy-to-access location. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle near the yellow wire. Adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape.
Use 12 GA wire or larger for the power lead to the vehicle battery. The black wire connects to the positive battery (+) terminal. The white ground wire with a ring terminal connects to the vehicle body using the provided screw (drill a 3/32" hole if necessary). Yes. Remove the four M6 x 1.0 muffler heat shield bolts using a 10mm socket and remove the heat shield. If the vehicle has dual exhaust, repeat on both sides. After removing the heat shield, cut a 1-1/2" diameter hole in it (or them), positioned 2-3/4" behind the front-most mounting hole. Reinstall the heat shield(s) after the hitch is mounted and the exhaust is raised back into position.
The fishwire tool guides the carriage bolts and spacers through the vehicle frame rail mounting holes and access holes. Insert the coiled end of the fishwire through the hitch mounting hole in the frame rail and out the access hole. Pass the coiled end through the spacer and thread the bolt into the coil. Kink the wire to keep the spacer separate from the bolt. Pull the fishwire, spacer, and bolt through the frame and out the mounting hole. This prevents loss of bolts or spacers inside the frame rail and guides the hitch during mounting.
The hitch uses four mounting locations. You will fishwire four 7/16" carriage bolts and four square-hole spacers into the frame rail through the forward access holes, one at each location.
Remove the three rubber plugs in each frame rail before fishwiring the carriage bolts and spacers into the forward access holes.
