Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Mazda Tribute and Ford Escape (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. It is also compatible with a weight distribution hitch for level towing and a rating of 5,000 lbs. WD and 500 lbs. WDTW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.

The hitch includes: 4× M12×1.75 hex head cap screws (grade 10.9), 4× S-CON washers (1/2"), 1× 1/4" washer, 1× M6–1.00×20 hex bolt, 1× 7/16" fishwire, 1× 0.250×0.88×2.25" square hole spacer, 6× 7/16"–14 UNC handle nuts (grade 8), and 6× 7/16"–14 UNC carriage bolts, 1¾" long (grade 8).
Yes, on 2002 and earlier models you must remove the heat shield before installation. After installing the hitch, trim the heat shield as required for re-fit and re-install it using existing fasteners, except over the hitch bracket where you must use the new 6mm hex bolt and flat washer supplied with the hitch.
Drilling is required on some vehicles. The installation method depends on whether your vehicle has weld nuts in the frame. If it does, you will drill center holes using the hitch as a template. If your vehicle does not have frame weld nuts, no drilling is required; instead, fishwire carriage bolts and spacers are used.
1. Remove the heat shield (on 2002 and earlier models). 2. Raise the hitch into position and secure it temporarily with hex bolts and washers. 3. Use the hitch as a template to locate and drill center holes. 4. Install carriage bolts and spacers as shown in the diagram. 5. Torque all 12mm fasteners to 79 lb-ft and all 7/16" fasteners to 70 lb-ft. 6. Trim and re-install the heat shield using existing fasteners, except over the hitch bracket where you use the new 6mm hex bolt and flat washer; torque the 6mm bolt to 9 lb-ft.

Trim and re-install the heat shield using existing fasteners, except over the hitch bracket where you use the new 6mm hex bolt and flat washer; torque the 6mm bolt to 9 lb-ft.

You must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, even though the hitch itself has a gross load capacity of 3,500 lbs. trailer weight (weight-carrying) or 5,000 lbs. (weight-distribution). Always follow your vehicle's specifications.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This is the primary maintenance requirement stated in the manual.
