This CURT class 2 hitch is perfect for towing a small trailer, such as a boat trailer, lightweight camper or utility trailer. It can also be used to mount a hitch cargo carrier or bike rack (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Like all CURT custom hitches, this class 2 trailer hitch is made for a vehicle-specific fit. It is engineered to seamlessly integrate with select years of the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX (see application info to verify fitment). It is rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight. It is also equipped with 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" hitch receiver to accept the included ball mount. The ball mount that comes with this hitch kit has a 3/4" trailer ball hole and can be positioned in the drop or rise orientation for level towing with your specific trailer (trailer ball not included). Like all CURT custom receiver hitches, this class 2 hitch is designed, manufactured, finished and tested with the utmost care. It is engineered for a precise fit, easy installation, maximum towing strength and an integrated look on the vehicle. It is also tested to SAE J684 protocols for safety. This class 2 trailer hitch is finished with our industry-leading dual-coat process for unparalleled rust, chip and UV resistance. It is descaled for a smooth surface, submersed in liquid A-coat for rust prevention inside and out, covered with a highly durable powder coat, and finally co-cured for a dependable shield against the elements. Yes, heat shield trimming is required. After removing the heat shields from both sides of the vehicle, you must trim off a tab from both the driver and passenger side heat shields using tin snips or aviation shears. The heat shields are then reinstalled without the screws that attach them to the frame rails; they will be sandwiched between the vehicle frame rails and the hitch.
The exhaust must be lowered before installation. Remove the three rear rubber exhaust isolators (hangers) and use wire to hold the exhaust up high enough to prevent damage to the exhaust tube. After the hitch is installed and torqued, the exhaust is reinstalled by reattaching the isolators.
1. Lower the exhaust by removing three rubber exhaust isolators and securing with wire. 2. Remove heat shields from both sides (3 bolts and 1 plastic plug each; driver side also has a plastic clip). 3. Trim the tab off both heat shields and reinstall without frame rail screws. 4. Fishwire 1/2-13 x 1 1/2" carriage bolts with CM-SP19 spacers through bumper mounts to frame rail holes. 5. Raise hitch into position and secure with 1/2" flange nuts. 6. Using the hitch as a template, drill rear holes with 17/32" drill bit. 7. Fishwire 1/2-13 x 1 3/4" carriage bolts with spacers and secure with flange nuts. 8. Torque all 1/2" hardware to 110 lb-ft. 9. Reinstall exhaust.
Fishwire is a technique for threading fasteners through tight spaces. The 1/2" fishwire supplied with the hitch is used to guide the carriage bolts and spacers through the rear of the bumper mounts and into the holes in the frame rails. This allows you to position the bolts without having to access them from the front.
After trimming the tab off the heat shield, reinstall it without the screws that attach it to the frame rails. The heat shield will then be sandwiched between the vehicle frame rails and the hitch. The side plate of the hitch will straddle the seam between the frame rail and the bumper beam.
All 1/2" hardware (carriage bolts and hex flange nuts) must be torqued to 110 lb-ft. This includes both the front 1/2-13 x 1 1/2" bolts and the rear 1/2-13 x 1 3/4" bolts. A torque wrench is required to achieve the correct specification.
