This class 1 trailer hitch and ball mount combination is designed for a custom fit on select years of the Chevrolet Sonic (see application info to verify fitment). The hitch integrates with the vehicle's frame and provides a useful and dependable 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" receiver. The receiver is perfect for attaching the included ball mount and towing a small trailer, or for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted cargo carrier, bike rack or other accessory. This particular class 1 hitch is rated for 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). The ball mount included with this trailer hitch quickly and easily installs into the hitch receiver and has a 3/4" trailer ball hole (trailer ball not included). It can be mounted in the rise or drop position to promote level towing. Like all CURT custom hitches, this class 1 hitch is protected with our co-cured finishing process. It is descaled for a smooth surface, immersed in liquid A-coat for rust resistance inside and out, covered with a durable black powder coat and finally co-cured for an industry-leading rust, chip and UV-resistant shield. No matter where you're headed or which season of the year you’re towing in, this CURT hitch is equipped for long-lasting resilience to the elements. It features an open-back receiver for easy cleaning, and it comes with all the hardware necessary for the installation.

You will need: a power drill, 1" drill bit (required for 2017 models), a ratchet, 11/16" socket, a torque wrench, and safety glasses. The manual notes that using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required.
Two people may be required to ease installation. The manual recommends reading all instructions thoroughly before beginning and notes that if you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, you should contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.

Installation follows these steps: (1) Fishwire CM-SP2 spacers and 7/16-14 carriage bolts through the access hole in the frame rail and down through the attachment hole at two places on each side. For 2017 models, enlarge the forward-most attachment hole to 1 inch first and use it as the new access hole. (2) Raise the hitch into position, lifting the driver side first over the tailpipe, then the passenger side. (3) Secure with 7/16" hex flange nuts. (4) Torque all 7/16-14 fasteners to 70 ft.-lbs.
Drilling is required only for 2017 Chevrolet Sonic Sedan models. You must enlarge the forward-most attachment hole on both sides to 1 inch using a power drill and 1" drill bit. This enlarged hole becomes the new access hole for fishwire hardware. For 2012-2016 models, no drilling is required.
All 7/16-14 fasteners must be torqued to 70 ft.-lbs. This includes the carriage bolts and hex flange nuts.
The hitch includes: (1) four 7/16-14 x 1 1/2" carriage bolts, (2) four CM-SP2 spacers (.250 x .88 x 2.25"), (3) four 7/16-14 hex flange nuts, and (4) four 7/16" fishwire pieces.
Fishwire hardware is used to secure the CM-SP2 spacers and 7/16-14 carriage bolts through the access hole in the frame rail and down through the attachment hole. For 2017 models, the fishwire is reversed in the enlarged access hole to use as the attachment point. The fishwire allows the bolts to be threaded through the frame rail without direct access.
The hitch must be lifted driver side first over the tailpipe, then the passenger side. This sequence prevents interference with the vehicle tailpipe during installation.
You should periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. This ongoing inspection helps maintain the integrity and safety of the installation.
