The pullwire method is used on 4-door Accent models (Figure 2). Insert items 1 and 2 (the carriage bolts) through the forward hole in the frame rail using the pullwires to guide them. Leave the pullwires attached. Later, feed the pullwires through the slot on the hitch bars and use them to help position the hitch before removing them and attaching items 3 and 4. The pullwires are temporary installation aids.
The reverse pullwire method is used on 5-door Accent models (Figure 3). Insert items 1 and 2 (the carriage bolts) through the hole in the frame rail using the pullwires. Leave the pullwires attached. Later, feed the pullwires through the slot on the hitch bars and use them to help position the hitch before removing them and attaching items 3 and 4.
The spacer configuration depends on your vehicle model. For 5-door Accent, use 1 spacer (item 7). For 4-door Accent, use 2 spacers. For Kia Rio, use no spacers. Place the spacer(s) in position on the hitch tie-down bracket as shown in Figure 1 before raising the hitch into position. The manual notes that you should kink the pullwire to keep the spacer independent of the bolt.
1. Insert item 5 (carriage bolt 7/16-14 × 2.50) through item 6 (spacer .25 × 1.00 × 3.00) and then through the tie-down hook. 2. Place item 7 (spacer configuration per your model) on the hitch tie-down bracket. 3. Raise the hitch into position carefully without pushing fasteners into frame rails. 4. Remove pullwires and attach items 3 and 4 (the remaining fasteners). 5. Use remaining fasteners to attach to the tie-down hook as shown in Figure 1.
All 7/16-14 GR5 fasteners must be tightened to 50 lb.-ft. (68 N·m) using a torque wrench. This applies to all bolts and nuts in the assembly.
The drawbar (sold separately, part number 3592) must be used in the rise position only. Do not use it in any other position.
If the hitch is removed, plug all holes in the trunk pan or other body panels to prevent entry of water and exhaust fumes.
Observe safety precautions when working beneath a vehicle and wear eye protection. Do not cut access or attachment holes with a torch. If the hitch or ball becomes damaged, it must be removed and replaced immediately.
