Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 5,000 lbs. GTW and 500 lbs. TW. It is also compatible with a weight distribution hitch for level towing and a rating of 5,000 lbs. WD and 500 lbs. WDTW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.

The kit includes: 1 trailer hitch, 4 carriage bolts (1/2"–13 x 1.5"), 4 hex bolts (M10x1.5 - 45mm), 4 serrated-flange nuts (1/2"), 4 conical-toothed washers (3/8"), and 4 square-hole spacers (25" x 1.00" x 2.00"). The factory bumper beam and four M10 bolts are removed during installation and returned to the vehicle owner.
The installation is rated as Difficult based on time and effort involved. The manual does not explicitly require professional installation, but difficulty level may vary depending on installer expertise, vehicle condition, and proper tools and equipment. Consider your skill level and available tools before attempting installation.
Installation requires: lowering of the exhaust, temporary rear bumper cover removal, and rear bumper beam replacement. The factory bumper beam is removed and returned to the vehicle owner. The exhaust is lowered during installation and then reinstalled and torqued to 45 ft-lbs.
The fishwire tool is used to guide the 1/2" carriage bolts and spacers through the vehicle frame rail during installation. Insert the coiled end of the fishwire through the hitch mounting hole in the vehicle frame rail and out the access hole. Pass the coiled end through the spacer and thread the bolt into the coil. Kink the wire to keep the spacer separate from the bolt, then pull the fishwire, spacer, and bolt through the frame and out the mounting hole. This prevents loss of bolts or spacers inside the frame rail.
Torque the 1/2" serrated-flange nuts to 90 ft-lbs. These nuts secure the 1/2"–13 x 1.5" carriage bolts that are installed using the fishwire technique.
Torque the M10 bolts (M10x1.5 - 45mm) to 45 ft-lbs. These bolts are used to reinstall the exhaust after the hitch is mounted.
Follow these steps in order: (1) Remove two bolts from the bottom of the bumper cover using a T-15 Torx bit, then open the tailgate and remove two more bolts from above with a T-20 Torx bit. (2) Remove the cover near each taillight and remove the bolt securing the bumper cover using a 7mm socket. (3) Remove four screws from each rear wheel well starting at the bottom and working upward using a T-15 Torx bit. (4) Carefully pull the wheel well trim to remove it from the bumper cover, exposing a bolt at the top of the bumper cover, and remove it with a 7mm socket. (5) Carefully remove the bumper cover by pulling out starting at the wheel well and working towards the rear of the vehicle, disconnecting electrical connectors as needed.
Remove four M10 nuts and four M10 bolts using a 15mm socket. Be sure to support the exhaust when removing the lower fasteners to prevent damage to the vehicle exhaust system. Return the bumper beam and four bolts to the vehicle owner. Set aside the four M10 nuts for reinstallation in the next step.
Slide the hitch into position in the frame rail and over the weld studs. Loosely secure it with the four M10 nuts that were removed from the factory bumper beam in the previous step. Do not fully tighten these nuts until after the carriage bolts are installed and torqued.
Reinstall the exhaust using the supplied M10 bolts (hex bolts, M10x1.5 - 45mm) and conical-toothed washers. Torque the M10 bolts to 45 ft-lbs. The manual shows two options: one with conical-toothed washers and one without; follow the option that matches your vehicle configuration.
Reinstall the bumper cover by following Steps 1–5 in reverse order. This means reversing the removal sequence: reconnect electrical connectors, reattach the bumper cover starting at the rear and working towards the wheel well, reinstall the wheel well trim, reinstall the four screws in each rear wheel well, reinstall the bolt near each taillight, and reinstall the bolts at the bottom and top of the bumper cover.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. When removing the factory bumper beam, be sure to support the exhaust to prevent damage to the vehicle exhaust system. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity when using the hitch.
