The CURT 13478 has a gross trailer weight (GTW) capacity of 4,000 lbs and a tongue weight (TW) capacity of 600 lbs. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
The manual does not specify which vehicle makes, models, years, cab styles or bed lengths the CURT 13478 is designed for. Contact CURT product support at 877.287.8634 or check curtmfg.com to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle before purchasing.
Required tools: paint marker, 6" socket extension, exhaust hanger removal tool, torque wrench, ratchet, tape measure, shears, trim panel pry tool, 3/4" socket, and 5/8" open-end wrench. A stand to support the exhaust is also required. For a full tools reference guide, visit curtmfg.com/trailer-hitch-installation.
The kit includes 6 hex bolts (M12-1.25 x 40mm, CL8.8) and 6 conical-toothed washers (1/2"). The vehicle must have existing weldnuts on both driver- and passenger-side frame rails.
Yes. In Step 1, remove the plastic cover on the driver side by removing six plastic clips. Set the cover and five clips aside for reinstallation later. Return one clip to the vehicle owner. The cover will be trimmed in Step 4 and reinstalled in Step 6.
Yes. In Step 2, lower the exhaust by removing the two rearmost rubber isolators from the exhaust hanger rods. Use a stand to support the exhaust and prevent damage. The exhaust will be reinstalled in Step 6 after the hitch is mounted.
Use an exhaust hanger removal tool if available. If not, use a 5/8" open-end wrench: slide it up to the rubber isolator, cradling the hanger rod. Place the flat edge of a pry bar between the wrench and the hanger stop or rod, then rotate the pry bar toward the wrench to remove the isolator. Using lubricant or soapy water on the hanger rod and isolator helps removal.
Spray lubricant or compressed air into the weldnut holes to remove debris. For heavy debris, use a wire brush. Take care not to damage the threads.
1. Remove the plastic cover and six plastic clips (Step 1). 2. Lower the exhaust by removing two rubber isolators and support with a stand (Step 2). 3. Raise the hitch into position, sliding the passenger side over the exhaust first, and align three holes on each side with weldnuts (Step 3). 4. Trim the plastic cover to dimensions shown (Step 4). 5. Inspect hitch and bumper fascia clearance; trim bumper fascia if needed (Step 5). 6. Reinstall the plastic cover and exhaust (Step 6).
In Step 3, raise the hitch into position by sliding the passenger side of the hitch over the exhaust first. Align the three holes in the hitch with the three weldnuts in the bottom of both driver- and passenger-side frame rails. Loosely install three hex bolts and three conical washers on each side before torquing.
Torque all M12 fasteners to 60 ft-lbs. Install the bolts and washers loosely first, then torque to specification after alignment.
The hex bolts are M12-1.25 x 40mm, Class 8.8. Six bolts are included, three for each side of the hitch.
The conical-toothed washers are 1/2" in size. Six washers are included, three for each side of the hitch.
The conical-toothed washer should be placed between the hex bolt and the hitch side plate, with the toothed side facing the hitch to grip and prevent loosening.
No drilling is required. The hitch aligns with three existing weldnuts on each side of the vehicle frame rails. However, the plastic cover must be trimmed to dimensions shown in Step 4, and the bumper fascia tab may need trimming for clearance in Step 5.
Trim the plastic cover to the following dimensions: 10-3/8" width, 6-3/4" height, 4" depth, and 1-3/4" at the bottom section. Use shears to cut the cover as shown in Step 4.
Trim the bumper fascia tab only if needed for clearance. In Step 5, inspect the hitch and the bumper fascia tab on the passenger side near the exhaust. If additional clearance is needed between the hitch and bumper fascia tab, trim the fascia tab as needed.
Wear safety glasses at all times during installation. Use a stand to support the exhaust when it is lowered to prevent damage. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity when using the hitch.
Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The CURT 13478 is rated for 4,000 lbs GTW and 600 lbs tongue weight, but your vehicle's capacity may be lower.
In Step 5, inspect the hitch and the bumper fascia tab on the passenger side near the exhaust to ensure adequate clearance. Trim the bumper fascia tab if needed. After installation, perform periodic inspections to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight and structural components are secure.
Periodic inspection of the trailer hitch should be performed to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight and structural components are secure. The manual does not specify the exact interval; consult your vehicle owner's manual or contact CURT product support at 877.287.8634 for recommended inspection frequency.
The manual specifies that all M12 fasteners should be torqued to 60 ft-lbs during installation and that periodic inspection should ensure all mounting hardware remains tight. However, the manual does not specify a retorque interval. Contact CURT product support at 877.287.8634 for retorque recommendations.
