The Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 ULTIMATE with internal jounce bumper 88154 (Part #BBCG88154) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate is an adjustable air helper spring system designed for 3/4 and 1 ton pickups and SUVs with leaf springs, as well as motor home rear applications and various front applications with leaf springs. It uses reinforced, commercial-grade single or double convolute bellows manufactured like a tire with layers of rubber and cords. The system provides up to 5,000 lbs. of load-leveling support with air adjustability from 5–100 PSI. An internal jounce bumper absorbs shock and eliminates harsh jarring on rough roads, and allows the air springs to safely run at zero air pressure.
No. Installing air springs will not change the weight ratings (GVWR, GCWR, or GAWR) of your vehicle. The installation of this kit does not alter the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or payload. You must check your vehicle's owner's manual and never exceed the maximum load listed for your vehicle. Exceeding the GVWR is dangerous and voids the Air Lift warranty.
Yes. Your vehicle may be equipped with a rear brake proportioning valve, which could be affected by load assist products. Air Lift recommends checking with your dealer before installing this product. However, if your vehicle does not have a rear brake proportioning valve or is equipped with an anti-lock brake system, installation will have no effect on brake system performance.
Required tools include: jack; jack stands or hoist; safety glasses; air compressor or compressed air source; spray bottle with dish soap/water solution; 1/2" and 9/16" open-end box wrenches; crescent wrench; ratchet with 9/16" and 1/2" deep well sockets; 5/16" drill bits (very sharp); heavy duty drill; torque wrench; hose cutter, razor blade, or sharp knife; and 3/4" wrench.
Normal Ride Height is the distance between the bottom edge of the wheel-well and the center of the hub with the vehicle in the "as delivered" condition. You must establish this measurement before installation because it serves as the baseline for proper air spring adjustment. To measure it, remove unusual loads, ensure the vehicle is on a level surface, and if necessary use a jack to raise the rear end so the vehicle achieves the original "as delivered" ride height. Then measure the distance between the center of the hub and the bottom edge of the wheel well.
The lower bracket (part D) should be secured to the air spring with two 3/8"-24 x 7/8" hex head bolts (K), lock washers (L), and flat washers (J), torqued to 20 lb.-ft.
The U-bolt (E) and clamp bar (F) should be secured with two 3/8" nylon lock nuts (H) torqued to 16 lb.-ft.
The jounce bumper bracket bolts should be torqued to 10 lb.-ft.
Set the air spring assembly on the leaf spring behind the axle with the "hook" of the lower bracket around the rear u-bolt. The vertical flange of the upper bracket must be mounted outboard, and the vertical legs of the upper bracket must be opposite the lower bracket attaching holes. The bellows must be mounted to the inboard side of the lower bracket.
Drill two 5/16" holes in a convenient location for mounting the inflation valves. Popular locations include the wheel well flanges, the license plate recess in the bumper, under the gas cap access door, or through the license plate. Ensure there is enough clearance around the inflation valves for an air chuck.
Cut the air line assembly in two equal lengths using a hose cutter, razor blade, or sharp knife. A clean, square cut is essential to prevent leaks. Do not use wire cutters or scissors, as these tools may flatten or crimp the air line, causing it to leak around the O-ring seal inside the elbow fitting.
Cut the air line leaving approximately 12" of extra air line. Insert the air line into the 90° swivel fitting until it bottoms out. Approximately 9/16" of air line should be in the fitting.
Route the air line along the frame to the air fitting on the air spring. Keep at least 6" of clearance between the air line and heat sources such as exhaust pipes, muffler, or catalytic converter. If you cannot achieve the necessary distance, install the included thermal sleeves. Avoid sharp bends and edges. Use plastic tie straps to secure the air line to fixed, non-moving points along the chassis. Tie straps should be tight but not pinch the air line. Leave at least 2" of slack to allow for movement that might pull on the air line.
Place a 5/16" nut and star washer on the air valve, leaving enough of the inflation valve in front of the nut to extend through the hole and have room for the rubber washer, flat washer, and 5/16" nut and cap. There should be approximately 1/2" of valve exposed after installation to easily apply a pressure gauge or air chuck. Push the inflation valve through the hole and use the rubber washer, flat washer, and another 5/16" nut to secure it in place. Tighten the nuts to secure the assembly.
The minimum recommended air pressure is 5 PSI, but the system can safely be run at zero air pressure. The maximum air pressure is 100 PSI. Never exceed 100 PSI.
Loaded vehicles require at least 25 PSI or more. A "loaded vehicle" refers to a vehicle with a heavy bed load, a trailer, or both. The springs in this kit will support approximately 40 lbs. of load (combined on both springs) for each 1 PSI of pressure. The required air pressure will vary depending on the state of the original suspension. Never exceed your vehicle's GVWR, regardless of air spring pressure or other load assist.
The vehicle can be lifted on a hoist for short-term service work such as tire rotation or oil changes. However, if the vehicle will be on the hoist for a prolonged period of time, support the axle with jack stands to take the tension off the air springs. When raising the vehicle by the frame, make sure the system is at minimum pressure (5 PSI) to reduce tension on the suspension and brake components.
Inflate the air springs to 30 PSI. Spray all connections and inflation valves with a solution of 1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water. Spot leaks by looking for bubbles in the soapy water. After the test, deflate the springs to the minimum pressure required to restore the system to normal ride height, but do not deflate below 5 PSI. Check the air pressure again after 24 hours. A 2–4 PSI loss after initial installation is normal. Retest for leaks if the loss is more than 5 lbs.
Inflate the air springs to 60 PSI and ensure there is at least 1/2" clearance around each bellows, away from anything that might rub against them. Be sure to check the tire, brake drum, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables.
Recheck the air spring system after 30 days or 500 miles, whichever comes first. If any part shows signs of rubbing or abrasion, identify the source and move it if possible. If relocation is not possible, the air spring may need to be remounted. If professionally installed, consult the installer. Check all fasteners for tightness.
Before road testing, complete the following: (1) Inflate air springs to 60 PSI and check all connections for leaks with soapy water solution. All leaks must be eliminated before road testing. (2) Ensure at least 6" clearance from heat sources for air springs and air lines. (3) Recheck all bolts for proper torque. Axle clamp bar carriage bolt lock nuts should be torqued to 16 lb.-ft. and re-torqued after 100 miles. (4) Road test the vehicle by inflating air springs to 25 PSI (50 PSI if loaded), driving 10 miles, and rechecking for clearance, loose fasteners, and air leaks.
Check the air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI.
Check air pressure weekly and always maintain normal ride height. If you develop an air leak, use a soapy water solution (1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water) to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring. When increasing load, adjust air pressure to maintain normal ride height. Always add air in small quantities, checking pressure frequently. Periodically check fasteners for tightness and inspect air springs for signs of rubbing. Realign if necessary. Occasionally spray the air springs with a garden hose to remove mud, sand, gravel, or other abrasive debris.
Deflate the spring and remove the line by pulling the collar against the fitting and pulling firmly on the air line. Trim 1" off the end of the air line, ensuring the cut is clean and square. Reinsert the air line into the push-to-connect fitting. If it still leaks, check the threaded connection by tightening the swivel fitting another 1/2 turn. If it still leaks, deflate the air spring, remove the fitting, and re-coat the threads with thread sealant. Reinstall by hand tightening as much as possible and then use a wrench for an additional two turns.
Check the valve core by tightening it with a valve core tool. If that does not resolve the leak, check the air line by removing it from the barbed type fitting. Cut the air line off a few inches in front of the fitting and use pliers or vice grips to pull or twist the air line off the fitting. Do not cut off the air line completely as this will usually nick the barb and render the fitting useless.
If you suspect the air springs have bottomed out, increase the air pressure. Bottoming out is a sign that pressure is too low for the current load.
If the vehicle is leaning to one side or the headlights are shining into the trees, the vehicle is not level. Raise the air pressure to correct either of these problems and level the vehicle. It may be necessary to maintain different pressures on each side of the vehicle. Loads such as water, fuel, and appliances will cause the vehicle to be heavier on one side. As much as a 50 PSI difference is not uncommon.
If the vehicle has a rough or harsh ride, it may be due to either too much pressure or not enough. Try different pressures to determine the best ride comfort. Stability should be the priority, meaning you may need to sacrifice a perfectly level and comfortable ride. If the vehicle rocks and rolls, adjust the air pressure to reduce movement.
If the front of the vehicle dives while braking, increase the pressure in the front air bags, if equipped.
The LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate is recommended for most 3/4 and 1 ton pickups and SUVs with leaf springs, motor home rear applications, and various front applications with leaf springs. Check with your dealer or Air Lift at (800) 248-0892 to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle.
Yes. You must drill two 5/16" holes for the inflation valves in a location of your choice, such as the wheel well flanges, license plate recess, under the gas cap access door, or through the license plate.
Lower bracket bolts: 20 lb.-ft. Jounce bumper bracket bolts: 10 lb.-ft. U-bolt clamp bar nuts: 16 lb.-ft. Re-torque the clamp bar nuts after 100 miles.
Minimum: 5 PSI (can run at zero PSI). Maximum: 100 PSI. Loaded vehicles require at least 25 PSI. Check pressure weekly and adjust to maintain normal ride height.
Keep at least 6" of clearance between air lines and heat sources such as exhaust pipes, muffler, or catalytic converter. If necessary, install the included thermal sleeves.
Inflate air springs to 60 PSI and ensure at least 1/2" clearance around each bellows away from tires, brake drums, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables.
Torque the U-bolt clamp bar nuts to 16 lb.-ft. during installation and re-torque after 100 miles.
There is a leak in the system. Use a soapy water solution (1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water) to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core. For air line connection leaks, deflate the spring, remove the line by pulling the collar against the fitting, trim 1" off the end with a clean square cut, and reinsert into the push-to-connect fitting. If the threaded connection leaks, tighten the swivel fitting another 1/2 turn, or if it still leaks, deflate, remove the fitting, re-coat threads with thread sealant, and reinstall. For inflation valve leaks, tighten the valve core with a valve core tool. If none of these steps resolve the problem, call Air Lift at (800) 248-0892.
Remove the air line from the barbed type fitting. Cut the air line off a few inches in front of the fitting and use pliers or vice grips to pull or twist the air line off the fitting. Do not cut off the air line completely as this will nick the barb and render the fitting useless. Trim the end of the remaining air line with a clean square cut and reinsert it onto the barbed fitting.
Reroute the air line to remove the kink or fold. Ensure the air line follows the frame with at least 6" clearance from heat sources and avoids sharp bends and edges. Use plastic tie straps to secure the air line to fixed, non-moving points, leaving at least 2" of slack for movement.
Inspect the tie straps securing the air line. If they are too tight and pinching the air line, loosen or replace the strap. Ensure tie straps are tight enough to secure the line but do not pinch it. Leave at least 2" of slack to allow for movement that might pull on the air line.
Identify the source of the rubbing. If possible, move the source away from the air spring. If relocation is not possible, the air spring may need to be remounted. If professionally installed, consult the installer. Check all fasteners for tightness. Ensure at least 1/2" clearance around each bellows away from tires, brake drums, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables.
