Yes. Kits 57398, 88398, and 89398 are designed for 2005-10 Ford Super Duty 4WD vehicles with single or dual rear wheels. The kit provides up to 5,000 pounds of load-leveling support.
Standard LoadLifter 5000 has zinc-plated steel roll plates and black nylon air lines. LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate has black powder-coated roll plates and black nylon air lines. LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Plus has stainless steel roll plates, braided stainless steel air lines, and stainless steel air spring mounting hardware.
Required tools include: standard and metric wrenches and sockets, adjustable wrench, ratchet, 5/16" drill bit and heavy-duty drill, torque wrench, die grinder, hacksaw, hex-key wrenches, hose cutter or sharp knife, hoist or floor jacks, two safety stands, safety glasses, air compressor, and spray bottle with dish soap/water solution.
The manual does not require battery disconnection. However, you may need to disconnect the wiring harness from the driver's side frame rail to gain clearance for the upper brace during installation.
Drilling may be required depending on your truck's configuration. If you have an aftermarket fifth-wheel hitch with a bracket that does not have existing side-mounting hardware, you must drill a 1/2" hole through the plate. You will also need to drill a 5/16" hole for Schrader valve installation. Drilling is not required for vehicles without fifth-wheel hitches.
Air spring mounting screws: 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm). Spring clamp bar bolts: 10 lb.-ft. (14 Nm). Axle clamp bar bolts: 16 lb.-ft. (22 Nm). Braided stainless steel air line fittings: finger tight plus 1 additional flat (1/6 turn) using two wrenches; do not overtighten.
The maximum air pressure is 100 PSI. The minimum recommended pressure is 5 PSI. Never exceed 100 PSI, and do not operate below 5 PSI as this voids the Air Lift warranty.
No. Installing air springs does not alter the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or payload of the vehicle. You must not exceed the maximum load listed in your vehicle's owner's manual or the vehicle's Safety Compliance Certification Label.
Check air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height. For loaded vehicles (heavy bed load, trailer, or both), maintain at least 25 PSI. The springs support approximately 40 pounds of load (combined on both springs) for each 1 PSI of pressure.
The LoadLifter 5000 Series provides up to 5,000 pounds of load-leveling support. The springs support approximately 40 pounds of load (combined on both springs) for each 1 PSI of pressure. The actual load support depends on the air pressure you set, which ranges from 5 to 100 PSI.
Yes. Air pressure can be adjusted with any type of compressor as long as it can produce sufficient pressure to service the springs. Even a bicycle tire pump can be used, though it requires significant manual effort. A compressor is needed for initial inflation and periodic pressure adjustments.
If the air springs are properly installed and maintained, they can last indefinitely. Proper maintenance includes checking air pressure weekly, maintaining normal ride height, inspecting for leaks, and periodically checking fasteners for tightness.
Yes, but installation varies depending on your hitch type. If you have an existing fifth-wheel hitch, you must remove the 3/4" hardware bolting the side bracket to the frame. If the hitch bracket has existing side-mounting hardware, you can reuse it. If it does not, you must drill a 1/2" hole through the plate. Some hitches have a spacer between the bracket and frame rail—be sure to reinstall it.
Yes. On dual rear wheel (DRW) vehicles, you must remove the sway bar strap and bolts holding the sway bar to the axle before installation. After installing the kit, you must slot the retaining straps to allow the sway bar to be reattached. The manual shows grinding the slots larger to accommodate the new configuration.
Raise the vehicle and support the axle with jack stands set as wide as possible. Remove the jounce bumpers from under the frame over the axle. If necessary, disconnect the wiring harness from the driver's side frame rail for clearance. On DRW vehicles, remove the sway bar strap and bolts. If a fifth-wheel hitch is installed, remove the 3/4" hardware bolting the side bracket to the frame. If emissions lines run along the inside of the frame rail, carefully remove the line holder.
The radiused (rounded) edge of the roll plate must face toward the air spring so that the air spring is seated inside both roll plates. The fitting on top of the air spring points inward toward the vehicle.
Install the swivel elbow fitting (Z) into the top of the air spring finger tight, then tighten it 1½ turns. Do not overtighten.
The spacer (F) is placed over both long carriage bolts and must be oriented with the wide portion facing outboard (toward the outside of the vehicle). The spacer helps position the upper bracket parallel to the frame and maintains proper clearance.
The attachment location differs by truck type. For single rear wheel (SRW) vehicles, use position 2 to insert the long 3/8"-16 x 10" carriage bolt (Q) through the locating bracket and lower bracket. For dual rear wheel (DRW) vehicles, use position 1. In both cases, use the hole closest to the leaf spring for the 3/8"-16 x 5.5" hex-head bolt (K).
The emergency brake cable must be relocated away from the air spring. Secure it to the bottom bracket using a supplied wire tie through the hole in the corner of the lower bracket. Failure to relocate the emergency brake cable may cause failure to the air spring and void the warranty.
Carefully push the line holder out of the frame above the axle, minimizing damage as it will be reused. Remove any additional holders forward or rearward of the axle to aid positioning. After installing the upper bracket, attach the L-bracket (J) to the back frame brace using the 1/4" bolt (L), flat washers (S), and nylon lock nut (T). After the assembly is positioned, insert the line holder post into the L-bracket. It may be necessary to move the line holder forward or back on the lines to align correctly.
Recommended locations are: inside the fuel tank filler door, inside rear wheel wells, or the license plate or rear bumper area. For LoadLifter Ultimate Plus kits, the recommended location is the rear bumper area or license plate. You must drill a 5/16" hole for valve installation.
Use zip ties to secure air lines to fixed points along the chassis. For nylon air lines, the minimum bend radius is 1". For braided stainless steel air lines, secure every 6" to 8". Leave at least 2" of slack in the air line to allow for movement that might pull on the line. Keep air lines at least 6" away from the exhaust system, fuel lines, brake lines, and electrical wires. Avoid sharp bends and edges.
Make clean, square cuts using a razor blade or hose cutter. Do not use scissors or wire cutters, as these create poor cuts that can cause leaks. A good cut is perpendicular to the line; a bad cut is angled or jagged.
No. The braided stainless steel air line cannot be trimmed. Any excess air line must be coiled and secured in an area where it will not be susceptible to damage.
Tighten the air line hex nut finger tight, then use two wrenches to turn 1 additional flat (1/6 of one full turn). Do not overtighten. The easiest way to tighten the fitting is off the vehicle before final installation.
The heat shield protects the air lines from exhaust heat. Attach the metal heat shield to the exhaust where it is closest to the air spring. Slide the air line thermal sleeve over the air line and place it where the air line is closest to the exhaust. Maintain at least 1/2" dead air space between the air line and exhaust. Double up hose clamps if necessary.
Inflate the air spring to 30 PSI. Spray all connections and inflation valves with a solution of 1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water. Spot leaks by looking for bubbles in the soapy water. After testing, deflate the springs to the minimum pressure required to restore normal ride height (at least 5 PSI). Check air pressure again after 24 hours. A 2-4 PSI loss after initial installation is normal. Retest for leaks if the loss is more than 5 PSI.
Complete the Installation Checklist: (1) Clearance test—inflate to 75-90 PSI and verify at least 1/2" clearance from tires, brakes, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables. (2) Leak test—inflate to 75-90 PSI and check all connections for leaks. (3) Heat test—ensure at least 6" clearance from heat sources; install heat shield if included. (4) Fastener test—recheck all bolts for proper torque. (5) Road test—drive 10 miles and recheck clearance, fasteners, and leaks.
Recheck the air spring system after 30 days or 500 miles, whichever comes first. Check for any signs of rubbing or abrasion on the air springs. If found, identify and move the source if possible; if not possible, the air spring may need to be remounted. Check all fasteners for tightness.
The recommended minimum air pressure is 5 PSI. However, the system can safely be run at zero air pressure when unladen (no load). Operating the vehicle below 5 PSI minimum air spring pressure voids the Air Lift warranty.
Loaded vehicles (those with heavy bed load, trailer, or both) require at least 25 PSI. The springs support approximately 40 pounds of load (combined on both springs) for each 1 PSI of pressure. Adjust pressure to maintain normal ride height. Loads carried behind the axle (including tongue loads) require more leveling force (pressure) than those carried directly over the axle. Never exceed GVWR regardless of air pressure.
Tuning comes down to three priorities: level vehicle, ride comfort, and stability. For a level vehicle, raise air pressure if headlights shine into trees or the vehicle leans to one side. For ride comfort, try different pressures if the ride is rough or harsh. For stability (the priority), increase pressure to address roll control, bounce, dive during braking, or sponginess. Start with the vehicle level or slightly above, and always add air when in doubt.
Yes. It may be necessary to maintain different pressures on each side of the vehicle. Loads such as water, fuel, and appliances will cause the vehicle to be heavier on one side. As much as a 50 PSI difference between sides is not uncommon.
The vehicle can be lifted on a hoist for short-term service work such as tire rotation or oil changes without damaging the air springs. However, if the vehicle will be on the hoist for a prolonged period, support the axle with jack stands to take the tension off the air springs. Use of on-board leveling systems does not require deflation or disconnection.
Periodically give the air springs a hard spray with a garden hose to remove mud, sand, gravel, or other debris. This helps maintain the air springs and prevents buildup that could affect performance.
Make sure the system is at minimum pressure (5 PSI) to reduce the tension on the suspension and brake components. This protects the air springs and suspension components during frame-lifting service work.
The system may have an improperly installed air line, or the air line may have holes or cracks. Leak test the air line connections, the threaded connection into the air spring, and all fittings in the control system using a soapy water solution (1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water). Look for bubbles to identify leak locations.
An air leak may be caused by a compromised fitting seal or air line. Check to make sure air lines are seated in connectors. Inspect fittings with soapy water. If the air line is not cut straight, trim 1" off the end with a clean, square cut and reinsert it. If the fitting still leaks, re-seal it with thread sealant.
Look for a kink or fold in the air line on that corner. Replace any air line that has been kinked, as kinks prevent proper air flow and pressure.
