The ARIES Switchback headache rack is an aggressive, off-road-style truck headache rack that features rust-free construction and an LED-compatible top edge -- all to make sure your truck not only stands out on the road, but also has the backbone to tackle the trail. The Switchback truck headache rack is built with all-aluminum construction, meaning you will never have to worry about rust. Aluminum offers solid strength while helping to keep your truck lightweight. The aluminum alloy is also protected with a highly durable carbide black powder coat finish that maximizes corrosion resistance and adds a sleek finishing touch. The Switchback is built to readily accept aftermarket lighting. Its top edge is a slotted channel that accepts LED light bars or work lights. Three 10" LED light bars (ARIES #1501260) are recommended. The slotted channel allows for easy installation of the lights and adjustable positioning. The Switchback also features a three-piece assembly, making it easier to ship, and allowing you to mount the headache rack without the center section for easy access to the rear cab window. Each ARIES Switchback headache rack is designed for vehicle-specific installation for a custom fit. This particular model fit specific years of the Toyota Tacoma (see application info to verify fitment). Brackets and mounting hardware are included.

The kit includes three headache rack sections (driver/left, passenger/right, and center/middle), a center mesh panel, two mounting brackets (driver and passenger), eight M8 hex bolts with flange lock nuts, four M12 button-head bolts with flat and lock washers, four M14 hex bolts with flat and lock washers and hex nuts, two nut plates, and eight adhesive wire ties.
You will need a ratchet, 13mm socket, 13mm open-end wrench, 22mm socket, flathead screwdriver, and 8mm Allen wrench. An M22 wrench is also required for tightening M14 bolts in Step 6.
Some vehicles have side rails that may need to be removed to slide the nut plate into place during Step 1. Check your truck's side rails before beginning installation; if they obstruct the nut plate, they will need to be removed.
Two people are required. Step 5 explicitly states 'With assistance, hold the assembled headache rack in position over the brackets,' and Step 6 notes that 'Assistance may be needed to line up the bracket with the headache rack.'
1. Slide nut plates into the driver and passenger side rails (Step 1). 2. Loosely assemble with eight M8 bolts and flange lock nuts, then fully tighten to 15 ft-lbs (Step 4). 5. With assistance, position the assembled rack over the brackets and align with M14 bolts (Step 5). 6. Secure M14 bolts with flat washers, lock washers and hex nuts using an M22 wrench (Step 6). 7. Fully tighten the M12 button-head bolts (Step 7).
Yes. Step 3 states: 'Determine if you wish to install the center mesh or leave the center open.' You can assemble the headache rack with or without the center mesh panel.
The M8 bolts that connect the three headache rack sections together must be tightened to 15 ft-lbs. This is specified in Step 4 after all eight M8 bolts are loosely installed and the assemblies are aligned.
The M12 button-head bolts must be tightened to 28 ft-lbs. In Step 2, these bolts are snugged but not fully tightened when securing the brackets to the nut plates. They are fully tightened in Step 7 after the headache rack is positioned over the brackets.
