The ARIES Switchback headache rack is an aggressive, off-road-style truck headache rack that features rust-free construction, an LED-compatible top edge and a patented installation system -- all to make sure your truck not only stands out on the road, but also has the backbone to tackle the trail. The Switchback truck headache rack is built with all-aluminum construction, meaning you will never have to worry about rust. Aluminum offers solid strength while helping to keep your truck lightweight. The aluminum alloy is also protected with a highly durable carbide black powder coat finish that maximizes corrosion resistance and adds a sleek finishing touch. The Switchback is built to readily accept aftermarket lighting. Its top edge is a slotted channel that accepts LED light bars or work lights. Three 10" LED light bars (ARIES #1501260) are recommended. The slotted channel allows for easy installation of the lights and adjustable positioning. Installing the ARIES Switchback aluminum headache rack couldn't be easier with our patented mounting system. It features unique stake po cket anchors that requires no drilling or complicated procedures. Simply drop it in, tighten a single bolt on each side, and you're ready to hit the trails. The Switchback also features a three-piece assembly, making it easier to ship, and allowing you to mount the headache rack without the center section for easy access to the rear cab window. Each ARIES Switchback headache rack is designed for vehicle-specific installation for a custom fit. This particular model fit specific years of the Chevy Silverado 1500, 2500 HD or 3500 HD and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 HD or 3500 HD (see application info to verify fitment). Brackets and mounting hardware are included.

The ARIES Switchback Black Aluminum Headache Rack, Select Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra Truck Cab Protector / Headache Rack (Part #BBDR1110110) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The manual does not specify vehicle compatibility. Contact ARIES Automotive at 877.287.8634 or visit ariesautomotive.com to confirm fitment for your truck model, year, bed length and cab style.
Yes. The headache rack mounts using stake pocket clamps that insert into the truck bed's stake pocket system. Your truck must have stake pockets on both sides of the bed.
Ratchet, 13mm socket, 22mm socket, utility knife, flathead screwdriver, and 13mm open end wrench.
Yes. Step 6 explicitly states 'With assistance' is required to hold the assembled headache rack in position over the stake pockets while positioning it on the truck bed.
M8 bolts are torqued to 7 ft.-lbs. according to the general torque table. However, Step 4 specifies that the eight M8 × 25mm hex bolts connecting the three sections together must be tightened to 15 ft.-lbs., which overrides the general specification.
The manual does not specify a torque value for the M14 bolts. Step 7 instructs to tighten them only enough to eliminate movement and fully compress the lock washer, without overtightening, to avoid bed rail damage.
Overtightening may result in damage to the truck bed rail and will void the warranty. Tighten only enough to eliminate movement in the headache rack and fully compress the lock washer.
Periodic inspections should be performed to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight. For black finishes, mild soap may be used to clean the product.
The kit includes: one driver-side section, one passenger-side section, one center section, one center mesh panel, two stake pocket clamps, eight M8 × 25mm hex bolts, eight M8 hex flange lock nuts, two M14 × 80mm hex bolts, two M14 flat washers, two M14 lock washers, and eight adhesive wire ties.
No. Step 3 states you may determine whether to install the center mesh or leave the center open. Both configurations are supported.
It depends on your vehicle. Step 1 instructs to cut out the plastic stake pocket covers on the driver and passenger sides. However, the note states that some vehicles have removable stake pocket covers and cutting is not necessary. Check your truck first—if the covers are removable, no cutting is required.
No. Step 2 notes that not all vehicles have a plug to remove. Removal is only necessary if the plug interferes with the stake pocket clamps. Use a flathead screwdriver to push in the tab and remove the plug if present.
No. Step 4 instructs to loosely assemble the headache rack using the eight M8 × 25mm hex bolts and M8 hex flange lock nuts first. Ensure the three sections are aligned properly, then fully tighten all hardware to 15 ft.-lbs.
The bolts should be inserted from the inside of the headache rack sections, as shown in Step 4. This ensures proper alignment and assembly of the driver-side, center, and passenger-side sections.
1. Lay the driver-side, passenger-side, and center sections face down on a flat surface. 2. Line up the four mounting holes on each side assembly with the four holes in the center assembly. 3. Loosely insert the eight M8 × 25mm hex bolts from the inside with M8 hex flange lock nuts. 4. Align the sections properly and tighten all bolts to 15 ft.-lbs. 5. Attach the M14 bolts, lock washers, and flat washers to the stake pocket clamps. 6. Position the assembled rack over the truck bed stake pockets with assistance. 7. Tighten the M14 clamp bolts carefully to secure the rack.
In Step 5, place the assembled headache rack on a work table with the slotted ends hanging off the sides. Insert an M14 × 80mm bolt through the slot along with an M14 lock washer and M14 flat washer, then attach to the stake pocket clamp. The clamp should hang down from the bottom of the headache rack. Repeat for the passenger-side clamp.
In Step 6, with assistance, hold the assembled headache rack in position over the stake pockets. Squeeze the stake pocket clamps closed to lower them into the stake pockets. Once lowered, slide the headache rack into the desired location, ensuring it is centered on the vehicle.
In Step 7, as you tighten the M14 hex bolts, the stake pocket clamp will expand in the stake pocket and pull up to the top of the bed rail. Ensure the clamp is fully expanded beyond the opening in the bed rail before fully tightening. Tighten only enough to eliminate movement and fully compress the lock washer—do not overtighten.
Overtightening the M14 clamp bolts may result in damage to the truck bed rail and will void the warranty. Tighten only enough to eliminate movement in the headache rack and fully compress the lock washer.
The manual states that periodic inspections should be performed to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight, but does not specify an inspection interval. Contact ARIES Automotive at 877.287.8634 for recommended inspection frequency.
For black finishes, mild soap may be used to clean the product. The manual does not specify cleaning procedures for other finishes.
