Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

The kit includes two main components: a 5th Wheel Base Wall Mount Plate (part 61-8526) with two hooks for the hitch base, and a 5th Wheel Head Wall Mount Sleeve (part 61-8527). The kit also includes four 5/16" x 3-1/2" Spax Power Lag Screws (part 201-1124), a T40 x 2" Torx Power Bit (part 229-1154), and a Bolt Bag & Manual Package (part 63-4888). Two fasteners are provided for each component.
No. The 5th Wheel Wall Mount Kit is designed only for wood-framed walls and should not be used on metal-framed walls. It must be secured into wood-framed wall studs with the provided fasteners. Using drywall anchors or other fasteners is not acceptable and could be a potential safety hazard.
The kit is equipped with pre-drilled holes to accommodate wall framing on both 16-inch and 24-inch centers. For 16-inch center walls, use the outer pre-drilled holes and the plate will span three studs (32 inches). For 24-inch center walls, use the inner pre-drilled holes and the plate will span two studs (24 inches).
You need a minimum wall area of 4 feet wide by 3 feet high to accommodate the 5th Wheel Wall Mount Kit when stored. The mounting plate should be installed a minimum of 3 feet up from the ground.
You will need: a measuring tape, level, pencil, drill, 3/16" drill bit, and stud finder. The kit includes a T40 x 2" Torx Power Bit for driving the fasteners.
Yes. You must pre-drill holes in the wall studs using a 3/16" drill bit before installing the fasteners. The mounting plate and sleeve have pre-drilled holes that align with wall studs at 16-inch or 24-inch centers; you use these as guides to mark and drill into the studs themselves.
1. Measure a minimum of 3 feet up from the ground and draw a horizontal reference line across the wall (approximately 36 inches). 2. Locate the wall studs and mark each stud that intersects the reference line. 3. Align the bottom edge of the Hitch Base Mounting Plate on the reference line, ensuring pre-drilled holes line up with the studs. 4. Pre-drill holes in the wall studs using a 3/16" drill bit. 5. Use two of the provided 5/16" x 3-1/2" Spax Power Lag Screws to secure the plate, using the T40 Torx Bit. 6. Verify both fasteners are completely tightened.
1. To the right of the mounting plate, use a stud finder to locate the next closest stud and mark it slightly below the Hitch Base Mounting Plate. 2. Draw a vertical reference line down the wall (approximately 16 inches). 3. Verify stud placement at both ends of the reference line. 4. Align the screw holes of the Hitch Head Sleeve over the vertical reference line. 5. Use a level on top of the sleeve to ensure it is straight up and down, then mark the top and bottom holes. 6. Pre-drill holes in the wall stud using a 3/16" drill bit. 7. Use two of the provided fasteners to secure the sleeve, using the T40 Torx Bit. 8. Verify both fasteners are completely tightened.
Four 5/16" x 3-1/2" Spax Power Lag Screws (part 201-1124) are provided: two for the Hitch Base Mounting Plate and two for the Hitch Head Sleeve. These are driven using the included T40 x 2" Torx Power Bit (part 229-1154).
Install the kit in a low-traffic area of your garage or shop to discourage small children from climbing on it after installation. Before beginning installation, clear your work area of any objects that could pose a safety hazard and ensure that no small children are present in the work area.
1. Remove the 5th Wheel Hitch from the truck bed. 2. Place the hitch base onto the hooks of the Hitch Base Mounting Plate. 3. Place the hitch head into the Hitch Head Sleeve. 4. Insert the 3/4" x 4-1/4" clevis pin into the hole on the side of the Hitch Head Sleeve. 5. Insert the cotter pin on the lanyard into the end of the clevis pin to secure the hitch head into the sleeve.
No. The kit is designed only for wood-framed walls and must be secured to wood studs. Metal-framed walls are not supported.
