Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX2318 is designed specifically for the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT. The attachment tabs are 24 inches center to center with a height of 14½ inches.
The manual specifies the BX2318 is for the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT only. The manual does not confirm compatibility with other model years or trim levels.
No, the BX8869 is available separately. It is located on the driver's side tail light assembly, as shown on page 4 of the manual.
Required tools are: 8MM socket, 10MM socket, 17MM socket, Phillips screwdriver, Loctite Red, vise grip, utility knife, reciprocating saw, hammer, and 5/16" nut driver (for drill).
The baseplate includes: six 10MM-1.25 x 45MM hex bolts (Grade 8.8), six 10MM lock washers, six 3/8" flat washers, two #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws, two #10-32 x 1/2" slot round head screws, two #10 lock washers, two #10-32 hex nuts, two 4-way connector adapters, two attachment assemblies (SF/LB right), two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables, two 3/8" quicklinks, and two receiver cap plugs.
The headlight assembly, front fascia, and tie down brackets must be removed for baseplate installation. The tie down brackets will be reinstalled after the baseplate is positioned. The fascia and headlight assemblies are reinstalled at the end of the installation.
No drilling of the vehicle frame is required. However, trimming of the air dam below the metal bumper is required. The air dam is cut using a utility knife to clear the baseplate.
Two modifications are required: (1) Using a reciprocating saw, make a horizontal cut on the rib at the end of the frame just below the metal bumper and one just above the lower offset, both sides. Make a vertical cut between the top and lower horizontal cuts flush against the side of the frame rail, both sides. (2) Cut and bend the support rib on the side of the frame just behind the frame end down flat against the frame with a hammer, both sides. These cuts allow the baseplate to slide onto the frame rail.
Yes, the frame modifications are permanent. The reciprocating saw cuts to the frame ribs and the bending of the support rib cannot be reversed without welding or frame replacement.
The cut edges must be spray painted with fast-drying spray paint to prevent corrosion of the exposed metal.
The removal sequence is: (1) Remove four push pins and three Phillips screws along the back edge of the black plastic cover on top of the fascia. (2) Remove two metric bolts just forward of the front tire on the corner of the fascia. (3) Remove two Phillips push pins from the lower edge of the fascia just forward of the front tires, both sides. (4) Remove two metric bolts from the top side of the headlight assembly, both sides. (5) Remove one metric bolt from the headlight assembly, pull forward, unplug and set aside, both sides. (6) Remove one metric bolt just below the headlight assembly and one Phillips push pin, both sides. (7) Remove one Phillips push pin from the underside of the grill opening, pull fascia forward and set aside.
The self-tapping screws are drilled into the webbing on the frame end using a 5/16" nut driver (for drill), both sides. This is shown in the photo on page 2.
After the frame modifications are complete, slide the baseplate onto the frame rail to align with the existing holes for the tie down bracket. Reattach the tie down brackets using 10MM bolts, lock washers, and flat washers. Maintain a level position with the vehicle while tightening. Use Loctite Red on all bolts before tightening, and tighten according to the Torque Chart in the General Instruction Sheet.
The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable. While the baseplate holes were designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear.
Using a utility knife, cut out the marked area on the air dam, both sides. Then reinstall the air dams.
Reinstall the fascia and headlight assemblies. Be sure all electrical components are plugged in properly. Then install the tow bar and safety cables according to the instructions included in their packages.
The manual states that all bolts should be tightened according to the Torque Chart in the General Instruction Sheet. That document is not included in this manual, so you must consult the separate General Instruction Sheet for specific torque values.
The baseplate uses 10MM-1.25 x 45MM hex bolts, Grade 8.8, zinc plated. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use only a replacement bolt of the same grade (usually Grade 5 or Grade 8.8). Do not substitute homemade or nontypical parts.
The attachment tabs are 24 inches center to center with a height of 14½ inches.
Yes, permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The BX2318 includes two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables with quicklinks. These cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails.
No. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines, as improper installation could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for: cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Obtain replacement parts from Blue Ox.
Be sure all electrical components are plugged in properly before completing the installation.
Yes, the attachment tabs should be removed when not in use.
Permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle.
Yes, it is crucial to register your baseplate online at www.blueox.com. Registration ensures you are alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
Repair parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor. Use only genuine factory replacement parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (usually Grade 5 or Grade 8.8).
