Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.

Yes, significant trimming is required. You must trim 2-1/2" inward on the front side of the frame cap toward the center of the vehicle using a reciprocating saw, making two horizontal cuts and one vertical cut on both sides. You must also trim the bumper on the back side as marked, cut a marked area 1-3/4" up on the plastic guard on both sides, cut off tabs on each side of the radiator, and cut the grille around the removable tab receivers. Be aware of objects behind the cutting surface when using the reciprocating saw.
When trimming the frame cap 2-1/2" inward toward the center of the vehicle, measure and mark 6 inches down. Make the two horizontal cuts first, with the bottom cut just above the lip on the backside flush with the bottom edge. Then make the vertical cut flush on the outside edge of the frame rail, being careful not to cut into the air baffle. Do this on both sides. After trimming, use good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
The manual provides a general torque chart for metric and inch bolts by size and grade. For the 3/8"-16 hex bolts (Grade 5) used to attach the baseplate, the torque specification is 33 foot-pounds. For the 6MM-1.0 x 30MM hex bolt (Grade 8.8) used to reinstall the washer reservoir, the torque specification is 8 foot-pounds. All bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart provided, and Loctite Red must be used on all bolts before tightening.

The torque specification for the 6MM-1.0 x 30MM Grade 8.8 hex bolt is 8 foot-pounds. This bolt is used with a 5/16" lock washer and 5/16" flat washer when reinstalling the washer reservoir on the passenger side.
Slide the baseplate onto the frame to align the existing holes and clamp, keeping the baseplate level with the frame on both sides. Using the baseplate as a template, drill the top front hole with a 13/32" drill bit. Insert a 3/8" nut plate into the 1-1/4" hole to align with the drilled hole, then tighten a 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" bolt and 3/8" lock washer into the nut plate using Loctite Red. The baseplate should be flush with the bottom of the frame rail. Repeat this process for four additional holes. Tighten all bolts according to the torque chart (33 foot-pounds for 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts).
After tightening all bolts, cover the 1-1/4" holes with tape and paint on both sides to protect them from rust and weather.
Reinstall the washer reservoir on the passenger side using the existing bolts and a 6MM-1.0 x 30MM hex bolt, 5/16" lock washer, and 5/16" flat washer as shown in the parts diagram on page 2. Be sure all electrical components and hoses are plugged in properly before reinstalling the fascia.
On the driver's side only, remove the ground wires from their present location (marked as 14A in the diagram). Use the #10-16 x 1" self-tapping screw included in the kit to relocate the wires to the new position (marked as 14B). This is necessary to clear the baseplate installation area.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables (36" Class III, part 226-0046) to the provided convenience link on the baseplate using the quicklinks (part 229-0359). If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Install on both sides of the vehicle.
The permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. Their principle function is to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame of the towed vehicle and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system; the weight rating of the two cables together will not qualify as a single cable. These cables must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed and are to be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after the actual baseplate installation.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Also ensure that all towing equipment is hooked up per manufacturer's instructions and recommendations.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You should reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and GVWR.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. This includes verifying that the washer reservoir hoses and electrical lines are properly connected on the passenger side.

No. Even though bolts may exist on the vehicle, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts.
