Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX2112 baseplate is designed for 1991-96 Ford Escort and 1991-96 Mercury Tracer vehicles. No other model years or vehicle types are listed as compatible in the manual.
Three items must be removed: (1) the plastic belly pan (three plastic pieces bolted to the bottom of the car under the engine), (2) the factory tie down brackets (stamped metal brackets at the front corners with slots at the bottom), and (3) the brackets bolted to the outer side of each tie down bracket that attach to the car frame. The factory brackets and their bolts are not reused.
Yes, the plastic belly pan is reinstalled after the baseplate is completely installed. However, the plastic around the tie down brackets will need to be trimmed to allow clearance for the baseplate side mount.
Required tools are: 10mm socket, 14mm socket, 14mm wrench, 17mm socket, 17mm wrench, 10" long extension for sockets, 3/4" wrenches, jack, and Locktite Blue.
The baseplate includes: 1 side mount weldment (P-side), 1 side mount weldment (D-side), 1 base tube weldment, 2 flat spacers, 4 bolts (1/2-13 x 1 1/2), 4 bolts (10mm-1.25 x 30mm), 4 bolts (10mm-1.25 x 35mm), 4 hex nuts (1/2-13), 4 hex nuts (10mm-1.25), 4 lock washers (1/2), 8 flat washers (10mm), and 8 lock washers (10mm). Eight of the ten bolts needed for installation are supplied; two additional bolts are removed from the center engine support during installation.
Replace the factory brackets removed in Step 4 with the side mounts provided. Place spacers between the side mounts and the tie down brackets. Use 10mm x 30mm bolts, flat washers, and lock washers to hold the side mount to the frame. Use 10mm x 35mm bolts, nuts, flat washers, and lock washers to hold the side mount to the tie down bracket. Apply Locktite to these bolts and start them, but do not tighten at this stage.
Using a jack, apply upward pressure to the bottom of the center engine support beam, raising the car body a couple of inches. Remove the two bolts holding the support to the frame. Lower the jack until there is about a 1/4" gap between the frame and the engine support. With the attachment tabs on the base tube assembly pointing forward and up, slide the center mount between the frame and the engine support. Apply Locktite to the bolts removed earlier and start them through the engine support and baseplate into the frame.
Using 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 bolts, nuts, flat washers, and lock washers, align the base tube assembly and the side plates and start the bolts. When all bolts align, tighten securely. Ensure Locktite was used on all bolts.
No drilling is required. However, dimensional variations between cars may make it necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear. The baseplate holes were designed to allow for easy installation despite these variations.
Yes, the plastic around the tie down brackets will need to be trimmed to allow for the baseplate side mount. This trimming is required when the plastic belly pan is reinstalled after baseplate installation.
Remove the jack and replace the plastic belly pan (trimmed as necessary around the tie down brackets). Then install the tow bar and safety cables according to the instructions included in their packages.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Use only the correct replacement pin and clip.
The BX2112 fits 1991-96 Ford Escort and 1991-96 Mercury Tracer vehicles only.
Yes, the plastic belly pan must be removed to access the tie down brackets. It will be reinstalled after the baseplate is mounted, with trimming around the tie down brackets as needed.
You will need: 10mm, 14mm, and 17mm sockets and wrenches, 3/4" wrenches, a 10" socket extension, a jack, and Locktite Blue.
Yes, Locktite Blue must be applied to the bolts attaching the side mounts to the tie down brackets and frame (Step 5) and to the bolts attaching the center mount (Step 7). Ensure Locktite is used on all bolts before final tightening.
Yes, a jack is required to lift the center engine support beam a couple of inches to create a 1/4" gap for inserting the center mount.
