Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

You will need: 13MM socket, 21MM socket, 11/16" socket, 5/8" socket, tape measure, and Loctite.
The manual does not address battery disconnection. Consult the General Instruction Sheet or contact Blue Ox for guidance on electrical safety during installation.
Torque specifications are provided in the separate General Instruction Sheet, which is not included in this document. Consult that sheet or contact Blue Ox for specific torque values.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended. The BX2164 includes two 36" safety cables (part 226-0049). These cables are in addition to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
The BX2164 is a base plate manufactured by Blue Ox for 1992–1996 Ford F-150 trucks. It provides a mounting point for a tow bar and allows you to tow another vehicle. The base plate attaches to the existing bolts on the back of the metal bumper without requiring any drilling.
The BX2164 kit includes: one base plate weldment (61-5827), bolts and fasteners (7/16-14 bolts, flat washers, lock washers, hex nuts, self-drilling screws, slot screws, lock washers and hex nuts), two 4-way connector adapters, two 36" permanent baseplate safety cables, and four 1/2" quicklinks. Existing metric hex nuts from the vehicle are also reused.

Loctite is a threadlocker compound that prevents bolts from loosening due to vibration during towing. The manual requires Loctite on all bolts before tightening them. Use Loctite Red for all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications in the General Instruction Sheet.
1. Remove the forward metric bolt from the cross member on the bottom of the frame using a 13MM socket, and remove the nut clip from the cross member on both sides. 2. While holding the bumper in place, remove two metric nuts from the back side of the bumper using a 21MM socket on both sides. 3. Align the base plate (item 1) with the existing bolts on the back side of the metal bumper and snug the existing nuts in place, using Loctite on all bolts. Tighten according to the torque chart in the General Instruction Sheet. 4. Install items 2, 3, 4 and 5 on both sides according to the drawing. Return the metal bumper to its original position and tighten all bolts with Loctite. 5. Install the tow bar and safety cables according to their included instructions.
Yes, you must remove the metal bumper to access the bolts on the back side. The installation process requires removing metric bolts and nuts from the cross member and bumper, aligning the base plate, and then returning the bumper to its original position.
Dimensional variations between vehicles can be considerable. If a bolt does not clear a hole, it may be necessary to file the hole slightly to allow the bolt to pass through. This is a normal part of the installation process.
Possibly. While the base plate holes were designed for easy installation, dimensional variations between vehicles may require filing a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear. This is not permanent damage and is a normal part of the installation process.
The BX2164 uses 7/16-14 x 1 1/2" Grade 5 zinc-plated bolts (part 201-0416), along with 7/16" flat washers (203-0004), 7/16" lock washers (203-0011), and 7/16-14 hex nuts (202-0004). The installation also reuses existing metric hex nuts from the vehicle. All bolts must be treated with Loctite before tightening.
The main bolts used are Grade 5 zinc-plated (7/16-14 x 1 1/2"). If any bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade to ensure safety and preserve the base plate.
The permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the base plate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines, as improper installation could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts. The manual provides illustrations showing recommended cable arrangements.
The manual states that each permanent baseplate safety cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system, and that the weight rating of the two cables together will not qualify. Specific weight ratings are not provided in this manual. Contact Blue Ox for the weight rating of the included 36" safety cables (part 226-0049).
No. The permanent baseplate safety cables are in addition to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables that attach the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. Both sets of cables are required for safe towing.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for: cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are treated with Loctite Red and tightened to the recommended specifications. This is the owner's responsibility.

Yes, the attachment tabs should be removed when not in use, if applicable. This helps protect the base plate and tow bar when the vehicle is not being used for towing.
You should inspect all towing equipment before each towing trip. Check for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are treated with Loctite Red and tightened to the recommended specifications.
The permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the base plate is installed on the vehicle. They provide a critical safety function and should not be removed.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Contact Blue Ox or an authorized dealer to obtain replacement parts. Using non-genuine parts could compromise safety.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your base plate. Do not substitute homemade or nontypical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (usually Grade 5). Repair parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor.
It is the installer's responsibility to watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. If the base plate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation. Take care during installation to avoid these components.
