Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes. The installation notes state that drilling is required and trimming is required. Specifically, you will drill holes using a 13/32" drill bit and a 1-1/4" hole saw, and trim the fascia flush with the bottom of the frame.
Yes. The installation notes confirm that the fascia and washer reservoir are removed and reinstalled during installation of the baseplate. The fascia is removed in steps 1-8 and reinstalled in step 18.
The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. While the baseplate was designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for manufacturer's tolerances. Minor adjustments may include filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051.
The removal sequence is: (1) Remove eight plastic Phillips push pins from the top of the fascia; (2) Remove three bolts from the wheel well on both sides using an 8MM socket; (3) Remove two plastic push pins underneath the fascia in the corner on both sides; (4) Pull back the plastic wheel well cover and remove the bolt underneath on both sides with an 8MM socket; (5) Remove two plastic push pins underneath the fascia in the center; (6) Remove one bolt from the top of the washer reservoir on the passenger side using a 10MM socket; (7) Remove one bolt from the right side of the washer reservoir using a 10MM socket, unplug the electrical connection, and cap the hose; (8) Remove two bolts from the left side of the washer reservoir using a 10MM socket.
Two trimming operations are required on both sides of the vehicle: (1) Trim flush with the bottom of the frame and in until even with the side of the frame; (2) Go up 1/2" from where the cut started flush with the bottom of the frame and cut out a V notch to the point of intersection with the side of the frame.
You will need a 13/32" drill bit to drill one hole using the baseplate as a template on each side, and a 1-1/4" hole saw to drill a hole in the frame next to the ground wires for the nut plates on each side.
According to the torque chart on page 1, the torque specification for 3/8" Grade 5 bolts is 33 foot-pounds. The manual emphasizes using Loctite RED on all bolts before tightening and tightening all bolts according to the torque chart.
According to the torque chart on page 1, the torque specification for 6MM Grade 8.8 bolts is 8 foot-pounds.
Yes. The manual explicitly states "BE SURE TO USE LOCTITE® RED ON ALL BOLTS BEFORE TIGHTENING." This requirement is emphasized in steps 14 and 15, and in the General Information section which states it is the owner's responsibility to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to recommended specifications.
The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. The manual shows possible locations for the kit on the fascia but does not state it is required.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system. Importantly, these cables must be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The recommended installation attaches the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in that case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do NOT use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning BEFORE installing the fascia. This is critical to ensure the electrical system is working correctly before the fascia is reinstalled.
After installation, verify that: (1) all bolts are tightened to the correct torque specifications; (2) all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning; (3) the baseplate is level with respect to the vehicle frame; (4) all fasteners and push pins are reinstalled on the fascia; (5) the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts; (6) the washer reservoir is properly reattached.
Yes. The General Information section states to remove the attachment tabs when not in use (if applicable).
Yes. It is crucial to register your product online at www.blueox.com so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, for your safety and the preservation of your baseplate, be sure to use a replacement bolt of the same grade. In most cases it will be Grade 5. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Do NOT substitute homemade or non-typical parts.
Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty. Additionally, towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the warranty.
