Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill out five bolt holes using a 17/32" drill bit: one existing hole on the passenger-side tie-down bracket must be enlarged from approximately 3/8" to 17/32", one hole must be drilled on the driver-side tie-down bracket, two holes must be drilled in the horizontal brace under the bumper, and two holes must be drilled in the angled frame member between the front wheels.
The vertical plastic air dam at the front of the vehicle must be slotted or removed. Two slots approximately 1 1/2 inches by 2 inches must be cut in the middle of the air dam to provide room for the center supports. The ends of the air dam must also be trimmed away for the outside supports. Alternatively, you can remove the air dam by taking out six bolts using a 10mm socket, install the baseplate, then hold the air dam up to the baseplate and mark your slots before reinstalling it.

1. Read the General Instruction Sheet. 2. Slot or remove the air dam. 3. Enlarge the existing 3/8" hole on the passenger-side tie-down bracket to 17/32". 4. Drill the driver-side tie-down bracket hole using measurements from the passenger side. 5. With an assistant, hold the baseplate underneath and start the two tie-down bracket bolts with Loctite Blue, lock washers, and nuts; partially tighten. 6. Push up on the front of the baseplate and drill the two holes in the horizontal brace under the bumper. 7. Start the two front bolts with flat washers, Loctite Blue, lock washers, and nuts; partially tighten. 8. Press up on the back of the center supports and drill the two holes in the angled frame member. 9. Insert the two 1/2 nut wires through a large slot in the frame member and bend them flat over the drilled holes. 10. Start the two rear bolts with Loctite Blue and whiz nuts; partially tighten. 11. Fully tighten all six bolts. 12. Trim and reattach the air dam if removed. 13. Install the tow bar and safety cables per their instructions.
The two 1/2 nut wires (part 61-4029) are inserted through one of the large slots in the frame member between the front wheels. They are bent flat over the drilled holes to hold the whiz nuts in place for the two rear bolts that attach the center supports to the frame.
Flat washers are required only for the two front bolts that attach to the horizontal brace under the bumper. The manual specifies 'put a 1/2 flat washer against the bolt head before doing this' for these bolts. The tie-down bracket and rear bolts do not use flat washers.
All six bolts are 1/2-13 x 1 1/4 hex bolts, grade 5 (part 201-0011). They are used with 1/2-13 hex nuts (202-0005) and 1/2 lock washers (203-0012). The two front bolts also use 1/2 flat washers (203-0005).
A 17/32" drill bit is required. This bit is used to enlarge the existing hole on the passenger-side tie-down bracket and to drill all five remaining bolt holes.
Yes. Loctite Blue must be applied to the threads of all six bolts before installing the nuts. The manual specifies 'Apply Loctite to the bolt threads' for the tie-down bracket bolts (step 7), front bolts (step 9), and rear bolts (step 10).
All bolts should be started and partially tightened as they are installed (steps 7, 9, and 10). Only after all six bolts have been started and partially tightened should they be fully tightened together (step 11).
The manual notes that 'dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable' and that 'it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear.' Use a file to enlarge the hole slightly if needed to allow the bolt to pass through.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with the BX1617 baseplate. They must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. However, they are in addition to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
