Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX2005 baseplate is designed for 2016-19 Mercedes Sprinter vehicles. However, dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and the baseplate may need to be tailored slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding.
The BX2005 is a baseplate manufactured by Blue Ox for 2016-19 Mercedes Sprinter vehicles. It is designed to be mounted to the frame of the vehicle to provide an attachment point for towing equipment. The fascia and bumper must be removed and reinstalled for baseplate installation. Specifically, you must remove: six push pins from the top of the grille, two T25 Torx screws from the grille, three push pins from each wheel well, four push pins from the underside of the fascia, four T20 Torx screws from the front cover, two T20 Torx screws from under the grille area, the temperature sensor on the passenger side, eight 13MM bolts from the bumper, and on the passenger side, the front and rear bolts from the tank. Place all removed components on a flat, sturdy surface for reinstallation after baseplate installation.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill using a 3/8 inch drill bit through the frame at the lower front baseplate holes on both sides of the vehicle (step 12), and through the frame lips into the top baseplate holes on both sides (step 13). The manual also notes that a hole will need to be drilled through the frame area at the same time as drilling through the frame in two places. Additionally, a hole must be drilled according to the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit instructions.
Yes, trimming is required. On the passenger side, you must trim the bracket stud flush with the frame being careful not to hit the condenser lines (step 11). The plastic shielding behind the top baseplate holes may need to be trimmed for easier nut access (step 13). On the back side of the fascia, you must trim off the inner grille at the joint all the way around (step 16). After trimming, remove any burrs so lines do not rub against them.
On the passenger side, using an 8MM socket, remove the bolt from the compressor line bracket. Pull the lines forward, then using a 10MM wrench, remove the nut from the bracket. Set the bracket aside—it will not be reinstalled. Trim the bracket stud flush with the frame, being careful not to hit the condenser lines. Remove any burrs from trimming so the lines do not rub against them.
1. Remove grille, fascia, bumper, and tank components (steps 1-10). 2. Remove and set aside the compressor line bracket on the passenger side (step 11). 3. Clamp the baseplate to the frame and drill the lower front baseplate holes using a 3/8 inch drill bit, then install and fully tighten the 3/8 inch hardware on both sides (step 12). 4. Drill through the frame lips into the top baseplate holes using a 3/8 inch drill bit, then install and fully tighten the 3/8 inch hardware on both sides (step 13). 5. Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the baseplate and frame on both sides (step 14). 6. Install the wire loom cover around the condenser lines and zip-tie the line to the baseplate (step 15). 7. Trim the inner grille on the back side of the fascia (step 16). 8. Reinstall the bumper and fascia with 3/4 inch spacers in the step area bolt recess areas, then install the 8MM hardware through the baseplate into the step area bolt areas and fully tighten (step 17).
Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads and tighten all bolts to the appropriate torque according to the torque chart provided in the manual. For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4 inch = 10 ft-lbs, 3/8 inch = 33 ft-lbs, 1/2 inch = 78 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 bolts: 1/4 inch = 14 ft-lbs, 3/8 inch = 47 ft-lbs, 1/2 inch = 119 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 8.8 bolts: 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 10.9 bolts: 8MM = 22 ft-lbs, 10MM = 40 ft-lbs. The specific grade and size of bolts used in each step are listed in the parts list.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. Their principle function is to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame of the towed vehicle and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system; the weight rating of the two cables together will not qualify. The cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle and must be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Handling of some cosmetic parts when installing this product may require the use of protective covers, rags, specialty tools, etc. to prevent damage. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
Be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. Verify that the permanent baseplate safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Verify that the wire loom cover is installed around the condenser lines and that the line is zip-tied to the baseplate to prevent movement.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor. The baseplate should be registered online at www.blueox.com so you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. DO NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. DO NOT use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Blue Ox offers a three-year limited warranty to the original (first) retail purchaser. The product is warranted to be free from defect in material and workmanship under normal use and service for three years from the date of delivery. The warranty is non-transferable. Register your warranty at http://blueox.com/warranty/
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. If used, a hole will need to be drilled according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
The attachment tab height is 25 inches and the attachment tab width is 22-1/2 inches.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. DO NOT substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, for your safety and the preservation of your baseplate, be sure to use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases it will be Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor. Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will void the warranty.
