Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes, drilling is required. The installation involves drilling six holes using a 13/32" drill bit: two top holes on each side, two bottom back holes on each side, and one bottom front hole on each side. The baseplate is used as a template for drilling the bottom holes.
Yes. After installation, the fascia must be marked and trimmed around the convenience links and attachment tabs before reinstallation. The manual shows the fascia being cut to fit around these components.
The horn may require bending slightly when it is reinstalled to its original location after baseplate installation. The manual notes this as a possible requirement in step 15.
Yes. Prior to reinstalling the windshield washer reservoir, it must be notched as shown in the installation instructions (step 16). Additionally, seven 1/4" flat washers must be placed behind the reservoir on the innermost side prior to tightening the existing bolts (step 17).
The manual provides general torque charts for Grade 5 and Grade 8 bolts in inch sizes, and Grade 8.8 and Grade 10.9 bolts in metric sizes. For 3/8" Grade 5 bolts (used in this installation), the torque specification is 33 foot-pounds. All bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart provided, and Loctite Red must be applied to all bolt threads before tightening.
The BX8869 tail light wiring kit is recommended for this vehicle. An LED tail light wiring kit is also available in red (BX88267) or clear (BX88269). A hole must be drilled according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX2636 kit includes 2 Class III safety cables and 2 quicklinks. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. This includes verifying that the horn, windshield washer system, and any other electrical components removed during installation are working correctly.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The baseplate should remain installed as long as you intend to tow with the vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow this requirement will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions. Even though bolts may already be present on the vehicle, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. The manual specifies which fasteners to use at each location.
Handling of cosmetic parts when installing this product may require the use of protective covers, rags, and specialty tools to prevent damage. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface.
Yes. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. This protects the exposed metal from corrosion.
In step 10, the baseplate must be clamped securely into place and verified to be aligned evenly before drilling and fastening. This ensures proper alignment before the permanent fastening bolts are installed.
On the driver's side only, a flat chisel is used to remove the nut that is located on the outer edge inside the vehicle frame rail (step 13). This nut must be removed to allow proper installation of the baseplate fasteners.
During the removal of the fascia and related components, a total of 10 bolts are removed from the front area: two 10MM bolts with push pins (one per side) and eight 5.5MM bolts along the front (step 1).

When removing the windshield washer fluid reservoir, be sure to plug the lines to avoid fluid leakage (step 9). Before reinstalling the reservoir, verify that the lines are properly reconnected and that the reservoir is securely fastened with the existing bolts and the seven 1/4" flat washers placed on the innermost side (steps 17-18). If leaking persists, check that the notch made in step 16 does not interfere with the fluid lines.
