Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX2227 is designed specifically for 2003-05 Honda Pilot models. The attachment tab height is 25.5" and width is 24". If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding.
No. Due to the design of the removable tabs on the BX2227, the RangeFinder II tow bar cannot be used with this baseplate.
Only the BX8833 and BX8851 adapters can be used with the BX2227. All other adapters are not compatible with this baseplate.
The following tools are required: 8MM socket, 10MM socket, 12MM socket, 13MM socket, 13/32" drill bit, vise grips, and LOCTITE Red. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
Yes. The front fascia, headlight assemblies, and metal bumper must be removed and reinstalled during baseplate installation. The fascia is held by thirteen pushpins on the top side above the headlight assemblies, metric bolts at the corners, and electrical connections that must be disconnected.
Yes, drilling is required. The baseplate is used as a template to drill six holes into the frame rail: three on the top of the baseplate, one on the side resting against the radiator support, and two on the lower portion resting against the side of the frame rail. A 13/32" drill bit is required. Drilling must be done on both sides of the vehicle.
Models with fog lights may need to be trimmed on the back side of the fog light housing. The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and minor adjustments may include filing holes slightly, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates to compensate for manufacturer tolerances.
The hardware kit includes: 12 × 3/8-16 x 1½" hex bolts (Grade 5), 12 × 3/8 lock washers, 12 × 3/8 flat washers, 4 × 3/8-16 hex nuts, 4 × 8MM-1.25 x 30MM hex bolts (Grade 8.8), 4 × 8MM lock washers, 2 × #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws, 2 × #10-32 x ½" slot round head screws, 2 × #10 lock washers, 2 × #10-32 hex nuts, 2 × 4-way connector adapters, 2 × baseplate safety cables (36" Class III), 2 × 3/8" quicklinks, and 2 × black cap plugs.
No. The two metric bolts on the top of the metal bumper bracket must be removed and will NOT be reused for the installation. Always use hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware specified in the baseplate installation instructions.
The 3/8-16 hex bolts are Grade 5. According to the bolt torque specifications chart, Grade 5 3/8" bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. LOCTITE Red must be used on all bolts.
The 8MM-1.25 x 30MM hex bolts are Grade 8.8. According to the metric bolt torque specifications chart, Grade 8.8 8MM bolts should be torqued to 22 foot-pounds. LOCTITE Red must be used on all bolts.
Yes. LOCTITE Red must be used on ALL bolts during installation. This is a required step for proper baseplate installation and is critical for safety.
1. Start the 3/8-16 x 1½" hex bolts and 3/8" lock washers into the nut plates but do NOT tighten initially (step 7). 2. Tighten the 8MM-1.25 x 30MM hex bolts, 8MM lock washers, and 3/8" flat washers on the top side and existing bolts on the bottom side, using LOCTITE Red on all bolts (step 8). 3. Tighten the bolts on the lower portion of the baseplate and all installed bolts in the top of the frame (step 9). 4. Tighten the 3/8-16 hex bolt and lock washer at the radiator support (step 10). 5. Tighten the backing plate bolts (steps 11-12). 6. Ensure ALL bolts on baseplate are tightened before reinstalling fascia (step 13).
Two backing plates (part 102-6682, BX1015) are placed on the bottom side of the frame webbing to align with drilled holes. They distribute the load of the 3/8-16 x 1½" hex bolts and 3/8" flat washers, with 3/8-16 hex nuts and 3/8" lock washers tightened on the underside.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. Two safety cables (part 226-0046, 36" Class III) are included with the BX2227. They must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. Do not mount the safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and DO NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. After baseplate installation is complete, ensure ALL bolts on the baseplate are tightened. Reinstall the headlight assemblies and fascia while assuring all electrical components are properly plugged in. Install the tow bar and safety cables according to their included instructions.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use LOCTITE Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
Yes. Blue Ox towing products and accessories are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment necessary and knowledge to do "fit work". Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051.
The attachment tab height is 25.5" and the attachment tab width is 24".
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do NOT substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Failing to follow these instructions will void the manufacturer's warranty. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor, or by calling (402) 385-3051.
If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, call Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 before attempting installation. Do not assume the baseplate will fit without confirmation.
Handling of some cosmetic parts when installing this product may require the use of protective covers, rags, specialty tools, etc. to prevent damage. Take care when removing and reinstalling the fascia, headlight assemblies, and metal bumper.
Set all pushpins and bolts aside to be reinstalled later. There are thirteen pushpins on the top side of the fascia above the headlight assemblies, and metric bolts at the corners of the fascia that must be removed and saved for reinstallation.
Yes. During step 10, use the 10MM socket to remove the metric bolt from the air baffle and pull it down away from the frame. After tightening the bolt at the radiator support, reinstall the air baffle to its original position.
The 3/8" flat washers are used to level the metal bumper as needed between the baseplate and frame, as vehicles may vary in their dimensions. They are placed between the metal bumper and the baseplate during step 8.
