Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX2339 is a towing baseplate manufactured by Blue Ox designed specifically for the 2016 Hyundai Elantra (both Sport and GT models). It is installed to the vehicle's frame to provide attachment points for a tow bar. The attachment tab height is 15 inches and width is 24 inches. The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR; exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Yes, the BX2339 is designed for both the 2016 Hyundai Elantra Sport and GT models. However, the wiring kit recommendation differs by model: the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for the GT model, while the BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for all other models (including the Sport).
The wiring kit depends on your model. For the GT model, use the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit. For all other 2016 Elantra models (including Sport), use the BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit. You will also need to drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
Required tools include: large vise grip, utility knife, Phillips screwdriver, torque wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, tape measure, Loctite Red, 1-1/4" hole saw, 1/4" drill bit, 3/8" drill bit, 8MM socket, 10MM socket, 12MM socket, 7/16" socket, 7/16" wrench, and 9/16" socket.
Blue Ox recommends that baseplates be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do "fit work". Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051. However, the manual does not explicitly prohibit owner installation if you have the required tools and skills.
The following components must be removed and reinstalled: fascia (front bumper cover), air baffle, horns (both sides), windshield washer fluid reservoir, and bumper. The intake tube is also removed. All items will be reinstalled unless otherwise noted after the baseplate is installed. Place all removed components on a flat, sturdy surface.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill a 1-1/4" hole on both the driver and passenger side frames for nut plate access (step 14), and drill four 3/8" holes through the baseplate into the frame on both sides for the main baseplate bolts (step 15). You will also need to drill a hole according to your tail light wiring kit instructions.
Yes, significant trimming is required. Using a reciprocating saw, you must trim the frame area flush to the face on both sides (step 11), trim both ends of the bumper so they sit flush with the frame cuts (step 12), trim the horn bracket mounting tabs flush with the bottom of the bumper (step 12), and trim the lower section plastic shielding back flush to the vertical edge on both sides (step 13). You must also mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs (step 21). Use good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
The manual provides a general torque chart for metric and inch bolts by size and grade. For the 3/8"-16 bolts used in the baseplate (Grade 5), the torque specification is 33 foot-pounds. For 6MM bolts (Grade 8.8), the torque is 6 foot-pounds. However, the manual does not specify the exact grade for all bolts used in this installation. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening, and tighten all bolts according to the torque chart provided.
The baseplate kit includes an electrical bracket (part 299-0685). However, the actual tail light wiring is not included; you must purchase either the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit (for GT models) or the BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit (for other models) separately. You will need to drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your 2016 Hyundai Elantra owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and GVWR.
Yes. The kit includes Class III Safety Cables (part 226-0046, qty 2) and 3/8" Quicklinks (part 229-0359, qty 2). Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must not be mounted against wires, hoses or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
If the baseplate is involved in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before reinstalling the fascia, be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. This includes verifying that the tail light wiring kit is properly connected and that all lights work correctly.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
The kit includes: 4 x 3/8"-16 Whiz Nuts with 14" wire, 4 x 3/8" Nut Plates with 14" wire, 1 x BX2339 Baseplate, 2 x Attachment Tab Assemblies with hole, 1 x Breakaway Bracket, 1 x 1/4"-20 x 3/4" Hex Head Bolt (Grade 5), 2 x #10-32 1/2" Round Slotted Head Screws, 8 x 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" Hex Head Bolts (Grade 5), 1 x 6MM-1.0 x 30MM Hex Head Bolt (Grade 8.8), 1 x 6MM-1.0 x 45MM Hex Head Bolt (Grade 8.8), 3 x #12-14 x 1" Self Drilling Screws, 2 x #10-32 Hex Nuts, 1 x 1/4"-20 Hex Nylon Nut, 2 x 1/4" Flat Washers, 2 x 1/4" Lock Washers, 8 x 3/8" Lock Washers, 2 x #10 Lock Washers, 1 x Electrical Bracket, 2 x Class III Safety Cables, 2 x 3/8" Quicklinks, and 2 x Black Cap Plug Receivers.
The removal sequence is: (1) Remove six phillips push pins from top edge of fascia (3 per side), (2) Remove screw from fascia/fender joint in wheel well using 8MM or 10MM socket, (3) Remove six phillips push pins from underside of fascia (3 per side) and disconnect electrical connections, (4) Remove two push pins from intake tube and pull up, (5) Remove three screws from air baffle using 10MM socket, (6) Remove two screws from washer reservoir using 10MM socket and one upper rear screw using phillips screwdriver, disconnect lines, (7) Remove four screws from belly pan using 10MM socket and two push pins, (8) Remove eight bolts from bumper using 12MM socket and two nuts using 10MM socket, (9) Relocate front ground wire on driver side, (10) Remove horn bracket screws using 10MM socket on both sides.
Install the baseplate to the frame by aligning the existing holes in the frame to the baseplate. Level and clamp in place. It is recommended to use the existing bolts to pin the baseplate in place while leveling and clamping, then remove them after baseplate bolts are installed. Using a 3/8" drill bit, drill the four holes in the baseplate through the frame and install the 3/8" hardware on both sides of the vehicle. Fully tighten all hardware. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads and tighten all bolts to the appropriate torque (33 foot-pounds for 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts).
Reinstall the washer reservoir using the provided 6MM-1.0 x 30MM bolt on the front attachment point going through the baseplate (step 18). Reinstall the air baffle using the provided 6MM-1.0 x 45MM bolt on the front attachment point going through the baseplate, and reinstall the upper intake tube (step 19).
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The manual shows the recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in that case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
Reinstall the horns to the existing bolt locations just below where the original locations were (step 17). This is necessary because the horn bracket mounting tabs are trimmed flush with the bottom of the bumper during installation.
Hold the fascia as close to its original position, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs, then reinstall the fascia (step 21). Before reinstalling, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly.
Yes, the breakaway switch is optional. The kit includes a Breakaway Bracket (part 102-7287) and hardware for optional installation. If you choose to install it, attach the bracket to the vehicle at the desired location with the #12 self drilling screw, then attach the breakaway to the bracket with the supplied 1/4" hardware (step 20).
Yes, the BX2339 is designed for the 2016 Hyundai Elantra (Sport and GT models). Confirm your vehicle matches the manual photos. Contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 if your vehicle looks different.
For GT models, use the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit. For all other models, use the BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit. Both are sold separately.
Yes. You must drill a 1-1/4" hole on each side for nut plate access and four 3/8" holes for baseplate bolts. You must also trim the frame, bumper, horn brackets, and plastic shielding using a reciprocating saw, and trim the fascia around the attachment tabs.
For 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts, use 33 foot-pounds. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
The baseplate is rated to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight voids the warranty. Check your 2016 Elantra owner's manual for GVWR and towing specifications.
Yes, the kit includes Class III Safety Cables and 3/8" Quicklinks. These must be connected from the baseplate to the frame and are required in addition to legal towing vehicle safety cables.
Before each towing trip, inspect for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Verify all electrical connections are plugged in and lights work. Ensure safety cables are secure and do not rub hoses or moving parts.
