Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

No. The BX1931 baseplate must be used only with tow bars approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Co. Using this baseplate with any other tow bar will invalidate the limited warranty.
You must remove the headlights, the small grill in the middle of the upper bumper, and the bumper molding itself. The headlights consist of two separate pieces; remove the bolt and nut on the inside piece and the bolt connecting the two pieces together, then slide the outside piece out first. The center grill is removed by pulling back the small locking tabs on the back side. The bumper molding is removed after taking off 10mm bolts and braces on top, all screw rivets and bolts on the lower part, two Phillips screws at the fender wells, and two bolts on the quarter panels.
Yes. Holes must be drilled in the vehicle's frame using a 7/16" drill bit. The slotted holes of the lower brace are used as a guide when drilling. Additionally, the bumper molding will need to be trimmed to fit around the installed baseplate.
Required tools are: 1/2" wrench, 3/4" wrench, 7/16" drill bit, drill, Phillips screwdriver, C-clamps, utility knife, and Loctite Blue. A helper is recommended when positioning the bumper molding for trimming.
The kit includes: one weldment baseplate (61-4992), four 1/2" wire nuts (61-4029), four 1/2"-13 x 1 3/4" hex bolts (201-0068), four 1/2" flat washers (203-0005), four 1/2" lock washers (203-0012), two 3/8" x 1 3/4" hex bolts (201-0440), two 3/8" flat washers (203-0003), two 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), and two 3/8" wire nuts (61-4978).
The baseplate mounts to both the upper and lower frame of the vehicle, in front of and below the radiator. The upper mounting uses four 1/2" holes on the bottom of the cross frame directly in front of the radiator. The lower brace requires holes to be drilled in the frame using a 7/16" drill bit, guided by the slotted holes of the brace.
For the upper frame mounting, use the four 1/2" bolts (Item 4), flat washers (Item 5), lock washers (Item 6), and wire nuts (Item 2) provided in the kit. Insert the wire nuts through the holes on the back side of the frame. Apply Loctite Blue to each bolt and hand tighten.
For the lower brace mounting, use the two 3/8" bolts (Item 7), flat washers (Item 8), lock washers (Item 9), and 3/8" wire nuts (Item 10) provided in the kit. Apply Loctite Blue to each bolt and tighten all bolts after drilling.
With a helper, position the bumper molding as close to its original position as possible and mark where it will need to be notched to clear the baseplate. Be careful not to notch the bumper too much. After notching, replace the bumper, headlights, and center grill.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must connect from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating; the combined rating of two cables is what matters, not individual ratings. Permanent safety cables must be used in addition to, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Do not mount permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. Improper installation against these components could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Tighten all bolts to the recommended specifications using Loctite Red.
