Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.

For Grade 5 bolts: 33 foot-pounds. For Grade 8 bolts: 47 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite RED applied before tightening.
For Grade 8.8 bolts: 16 foot-pounds. For Grade 10.9 bolts: 22 foot-pounds. All bolts must have Loctite RED applied before tightening.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury.

The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2011-2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder with the BX1999 baseplate. It is not stated as required, but is recommended by Blue Ox.
The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. While the baseplate was designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for auto manufacturer's tolerances. These minor adjustments may include filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates.
1. Remove four push pins from the top of the fascia and two 10MM bolts with a 10MM socket. 2. Release the pin holding the plastic radiator cover on both sides. 3. Remove three push pins in front of each tire. 4. Remove one 8MM bolt in front of each tire. 5. Pull wheel well cover back and remove two bolts from inside each wheel well with a 10MM socket. 6. Remove three 14MM bolts from the bumper on each side. 7. Disconnect the temperature sensor from the driver's side underneath the bumper. 8. Remove the bumper. 9. Underneath the fascia, remove six bolts and one push pin. 10. Remove two additional push pins underneath the fascia. 11. Carefully remove the fascia.
The temperature sensor is located on the driver's side underneath the bumper. Disconnect it before removing the bumper during baseplate installation. Reconnect it after the bumper is reinstalled following baseplate installation. The manual does not provide specific details on the disconnection/reconnection procedure itself.
With a flat screwdriver, remove four push pins from the plastic fascia guard. Set the push pins and plastic fascia guard aside to be reinstalled later.
Use a 1-1/4" hole saw to drill through the bumper horn on both sides of the vehicle to accommodate installation of welded nut plates. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
Use a 13/32" drill bit to drill the remaining three holes on both sides of the vehicle, using the baseplate as a template.
1. Hold the fascia up as close as possible to its original position. 2. Mark the area on the fascia where trimming is required to allow attachment tabs, quicklinks, and breakaway bracket to come through. 3. If the fascia is metal, use diagonal cutters to trim the marked openings. If the fascia is plastic, use a utility knife. 4. With a Phillips screwdriver, remove two screws on the upper corners of the fascia. 5. Trim additional area to allow the baseplate to come through the fascia. 6. With a utility knife, trim back the outer edges of the fascia opening on both sides.
1. Slide the baseplate up to the frame of the vehicle, aligning with the existing holes. Ensure the baseplate always remains level. 2. In existing holes, install 8MM-1.25 x 35MM hex bolts with 3/8" lock washers on both sides. Use Loctite RED on all bolts. 3. With a 13/32" drill bit, using the baseplate as a template, drill three remaining holes on both sides. 4. Install 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" hex bolts with 3/8" lock washers and welded nut plates into the top two holes of the baseplate. 5. Insert 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" hex bolts with 3/8"-16 hex nylon insert lock nuts into the bottom holes. Do this on both sides. Always ensure the baseplate remains level. Use Loctite RED on all bolts.
Yes, the breakaway bracket installation is optional. If you choose to install it, install it on the driver's side of the vehicle between the quicklinks and electrical rods. Use an existing hole on the frame underneath the baseplate and insert an 8MM-1.25 x 25MM hex bolt with a 3/8" lock washer to secure the bracket. Attach the breakaway to the bracket with a 1/4"-20 x 3/4" hex bolt with a 1/4"-20 nylon nut.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The recommended installation is to secure the cables to the frame of the vehicle on both sides. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
1. Reinstall the bumper and reconnect the temperature sensor. 2. Reinstall the plastic fascia guard. 3. Reinstall the fascia. 4. Install the tow bar and safety cables according to the instructions provided in their packages.
The BX1999 includes a 4-pin connector and a 6-pin connector, as shown in the parts diagram. The manual states that all electrical connections must be plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia. The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle.

It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.
The permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. Their principle function is to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame of the towed vehicle and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system; the weight rating of the two cables together will not qualify.
No. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after the actual baseplate installation.
