Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1959 is designed for 1995-2000 Plymouth Breeze models. The baseplate has attachment tabs 24 inches center to center with a height of 13 inches. Note that dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable, and you may need to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear during installation.
The BX8869 tow bar is available for the BX1959 baseplate. The tow bar and safety cables must be installed according to the instructions included in their packages.
Required tools are: 7MM socket, 10MM socket, 11MM socket, 13MM socket, 9/16" socket, T-30 torx, 13/32" drill bit, Phillips screwdriver, vise grips, pry bar, utility knife, and Loctite. You will also need a drill and standard hand tools.
The headlight assembly, front fascia, and windshield washer reservoir must be removed. Specifically: remove two torx bolts from the top of each headlight assembly with a T-30 torx, unplug electrical connections, remove five push pins from the fascia edge between headlights, remove two push pins from the fascia's upper opening, remove one metric bolt from just forward of each front tire with a 10MM socket, and remove eight push pins from the bottom edge of the fascia. Remove two front metric bolts from the washer reservoir bracket on the passenger's side with a 10MM socket.
Yes, drilling is required. Using the baseplate as a template, you must drill four holes with a 13/32" drill bit on both sides of the vehicle. Loctite must be applied to all bolts before tightening.
Trimming of the air dam is required on some models. The manual does not specify which specific model years or trim levels require this modification.
1. Remove headlight assemblies (both sides) with T-30 torx and unplug electrical connections. 2. Remove push pins from fascia. 3. Remove metric bolts from front tires (both sides). 4. Remove washer reservoir bolts (passenger side). 5. Slide baseplate between reservoir bracket and frame, align with top edge of frame as far forward as possible, and clamp with vise grips (both sides). 6. Using baseplate as template, drill four holes with 13/32" drill bit (both sides). 7. Insert 3/8-16 x 1" bolts through baseplate into drilled holes and tighten hex nuts and lock washers with Loctite. 8. Reinstall washer reservoir, fascia, and headlight assemblies, ensuring all electrical components and hoses are plugged in properly. 9. Install tow bar and safety cables per their instructions.
Align the baseplate with the top edge of the frame, positioning it as far forward as possible. Clamp it in place with vise grips on both sides before drilling the mounting holes.
The baseplate uses 3/8-16 x 1" bolts, Grade 5, zinc plated (part number 201-0443). Four bolts are installed on each side (eight total). Each bolt is secured with a 3/8 lock washer (part number 203-0010) and a 3/8-16 hex nut (part number 202-0003). Loctite must be applied to all bolts before tightening.
The manual references a Torque Chart in the General Instruction Sheet, which is not included in this installation guide. Contact Blue Ox or your dealer for the specific torque values.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. Two cables (part number 226-0046, 36" CL III) with quicklinks (part number 229-0359, 3/8") are included. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Permanent baseplate safety cables must be used in conjunction with, and are not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines, as improper installation could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to recommended specifications using Loctite Red.
After installation, verify that all electrical components and hoses are plugged in properly. Check that all bolts are tightened according to specifications. Ensure the baseplate is not positioned against any wires, hoses, or brake lines. Verify that the tow bar and safety cables are installed according to their instructions.
Inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Tighten all bolts to recommended specifications using Loctite Red. Permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use (if applicable). Register your product online at www.blueox.com to receive alerts about product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Contact Blue Ox or your dealer for replacement parts.
Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the BX1959 baseplate. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (usually Grade 5). Repair parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor. Do not use homemade or nontypical parts.
The attachment tabs are 24 inches center to center and have a height of 13 inches.
