Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

You must remove the front license plate and holder, the lower section of the front air dam (secured by plastic push pins), and move the plastic wheel well liners down and out to access the body metal. The bumper mounting brackets remain in place, but you will remove only the two outside bolts from each bracket to reuse them.
Yes. You must cut two horizontal ribs from the lower section of the front air dam (one on each side), cutting them flush with the outside of the opening and flush with the vertical rib on the inside. You must also cut the top outside corner of the openings to a square corner. Additionally, the plastic wheel well liners must be cut away to clear the rear brackets after the baseplate is positioned.
Required tools are: 10 mm socket, 5/8" wrench, 18 mm socket, 5/16" wrench, 3/4" socket, pliers, 3/4" wrench, and a jack. A helper is also required to position the baseplate during installation.
The kit includes: one baseplate (61-3460), driver's and passenger's rear brackets (61-3381, 61-3382), driver's and passenger's upper brackets (61-3461, 61-3462), six 1/2-13 x 1-1/2" bolts (201-0051), two 7/16-14 T bolts (61-3463), six 1/2-13 hex nuts (202-0005), two 7/16-14 hex nuts (202-0004), six 1/2 lock washers (203-0012), and two 7/16 lock washers (203-0011). Six existing factory bolts are also reused.
The baseplate uses eight bolts total: six existing factory bolts (two removed from each bumper mounting bracket, two removed from the front subframe) and two new bolts provided in the kit. Four bolts are used on each side of the car.
The 7/16" T bolt (part 61-3463) is inserted into the rear hole of each rear bracket and passes through an oblong hole in the side of the body in the wheel well. The bolt's wings are aligned with the slot in the body by rotating the bolt 90 degrees after insertion, anchoring the rear bracket in place.
Because dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable, it may be necessary to file a hole in the baseplate slightly to allow a bolt to clear. This is a normal part of the installation process if bolts do not align perfectly.
Use a two-step tightening sequence: first snug all bolts, then tighten them all securely. Do not fully tighten bolts during initial assembly; hand-start bolts to check alignment before final tightening.
Yes. The manual specifies to use Loctite on all bolts. However, the specific type or strength of Loctite is not specified in the manual; consult the general instructions or the manufacturer for the recommended product.
Yes. A jack is required to support the front subframe. Place the jack under the front subframe and raise it just enough to hold the subframe in place when the two front bolts are removed.

After all bolts are properly installed, you are ready to install the tow bar. Hold the tow bar in position with the tabs aligned inside the tabs of the baseplate and insert the pins. Slide the hairpin clips through the holes in the pins, install a safety cable or chain, and adjust the coupler.
Do not substitute other devices if the pin and clip are lost. Contact the manufacturer to obtain replacement pins and clips.
