This class 1 trailer hitch and ball mount combination is designed for a custom fit on select years of the Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Pontiac G5, Pontiac Pursuit and Saturn Ion (see application info to verify fitment). The hitch integrates with the vehicle's frame and provides a useful and dependable 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" receiver. The receiver is perfect for attaching the included ball mount and towing a small trailer, or for adding cargo space with a hitch-mounted cargo carrier, bike rack or other accessory. This particular class 1 hitch is rated for 2,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 200 pounds tongue weight (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). The ball mount included with this trailer hitch quickly and easily installs into the hitch receiver and has a 3/4" trailer ball hole (trailer ball not included). It can be mounted in the rise or drop position to promote level towing. Like all CURT custom hitches, this class 1 hitch is protected with our co-cured finishing process. It is descaled for a smooth surface, immersed in liquid A-coat for rust resistance inside and out, covered with a durable black powder coat and finally co-cured for an industry-leading rust, chip and UV-resistant shield. Yes, but the muffler and tailpipe must be lowered during installation. You will remove all rubber isolators (2 or 3 depending on vehicle) from the hangers behind the rear axle. On Ion Redline models, the rearward isolator hanger needs to be bent down slightly for fastener clearance. After installation, the muffler isolator hangers are reinstalled.
Bumper trimming is required only on HHR-SS models. You will need to trim the center of the rear bumper fascia approximately 3 inches wide up to the first bend. Other vehicle models do not require bumper trimming.
The hitch includes 4 carriage bolts (1/2-13 x 1 1/2), 4 square hole spacers (CM-SP6, .250 x 1.00 x 3.00 inch), 4 hex flange nuts (HFN 1213), and 1 fishwire tool (CM-500-FW) for routing fasteners through frame access slots.
You will need a 9/16 inch drill bit (for Cobalt, Pursuit, and Ion vehicles), a socket wrench or wrench for 1/2 inch bolts and nuts, and a torque wrench capable of 110 lb-ft. The fishwire tool (CM-500-FW) is included to help route the carriage bolts and spacer blocks through the frame access slots. A tool to trim bumper fascia (on HHR-SS only) and a tool to bend the isolator hanger (on Ion Redline) may also be needed.

Use the included fishwire tool (CM-500-FW) to route the 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 carriage bolts and square hole spacer blocks (CM-SP6) through the access slots in the bottom of the frame on both sides. For rearward fasteners, fish the bolts and blocks through the access slots. For forward fasteners, insert the carriage bolts and blocks into the access slot and drop them back down through the slot, making sure the block spans both sides of the slot.
After installing the hex flange nuts on all 4 bolts, do not tighten them yet. First, slide the hitch toward the passenger side and up against the trunk pan while holding it in this position. This ensures proper alignment before final tightening. Once the hitch is properly positioned against the trunk pan, then tighten and torque all bolts to 110 lb-ft.
