A CURT trailer hitch is the key to pursuing your passions, whether you're taking the family boat out for an afternoon on the water or packing up the mountain bikes for a day on the trails. This CURT class 2 hitch is perfect for towing a small trailer, such as a boat trailer, lightweight camper or utility trailer. It can also be used to mount a hitch cargo carrier or bike rack (never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Like all CURT custom hitches, this class 2 trailer hitch is made for a vehicle-specific fit. It is engineered to seamlessly integrate with select years of the Ford Taurus (see application info to verify fitment). It is rated for 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 300 pounds tongue weight. It is also equipped with 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" hitch receiver to accept the included ball mount. The ball mount that comes with this hitch kit has a 3/4" trailer ball hole and can be positioned in the drop or rise orientation for level towing with your specific trailer (trailer ball not included). Like all CURT custom receiver hitches, this class 2 hitch is designed, manufactured, finished and tested with the utmost care. It is engineered for a precise fit, easy installation, maximum towing strength and an integrated look on the vehicle. It is also tested to SAE J684 protocols for safety. This class 2 trailer hitch is finished with our industry-leading dual-coat process for unparalleled rust, chip and UV resistance. It is descaled for a smooth surface, submersed in liquid A-coat for rust prevention inside and out, covered with a highly durable powder coat, and finally co-cured for a dependable shield against the elements. This class 2 hitch comes with a ball mount, hitch pin and mounting hardware for a complete installation.

Yes, part number 12296 is designed for Ford Taurus including SHO models from 2010 to current, sedan body style. The hitch is designed for use with ball mount #45518/D-18. Verify your vehicle year and model match before purchasing.
The hitch has a gross load capacity of 3,500 lbs trailer weight and 300 lbs tongue weight when used as a weight-carrying hitch. However, you must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower.
The hitch weight is 60 lbs.
Non-trailer loads can be applied to this hitch, but they must be supported by auxiliary stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support non-trailer loads will void the product warranty. Curt offers auxiliary stabilizing straps; see the Curt catalog or visit www.curtmfg.com for options.
You will need 10mm, 18mm, and 19mm sockets; an 8-inch extension; a ratchet; a torque wrench; and safety glasses. Spray lubricant is also recommended to ease installation of the exhaust isolators.
No, drilling is not required. The hitch uses existing holes in the Ford Taurus frame rails and trunk pan. The installation uses a fishwire technique to route fasteners through access holes in the frame.
Two people may be required to ease installation. The manual recommends reading all instructions thoroughly before beginning and notes that using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required.
The manual states that the hitch is carefully maneuvered into position against the frame rails by going between the exhaust and the bumper cover, but does not explicitly state whether the bumper cover must be removed. Contact Curt Technical Support at 1-800-798-0813 for clarification.
The exhaust system must be lowered and repositioned. You must remove the upper exhaust hanger brackets from the rubber isolators, lower the mufflers by removing bolts in the exhaust hanger brackets, and remove the exhaust hangers near the exhaust split forward of the mufflers from the rubber isolators. The exhaust is then re-secured to the hitch using the rubber isolators attached to hanger tabs in the hitch sideplates. The exhaust hanger brackets and bolts are returned to the vehicle owner.
The fishwire technique uses 1/2-inch fishwire to route a 1/2-13 carriage bolt and CM-SP10 spacer through the driver side access hole and out through the forward-most hole in the frame rail. The fishwire is then reversed to pull the carriage bolt and spacer back into the access holes on both sides of the frame. This allows fasteners to be positioned in the frame holes before the hitch is installed. Refer to the Fishwire Technique Diagram and Reverse Pull Fishwire Diagram in the manual for visual guidance.
Torque all 1/2-inch hardware to 110 ft-lbs. Torque all M12 hardware to 79 ft-lbs. This includes the 1/2-13 carriage bolts with hex flange nuts and the M12-1.75 × 35mm hex bolt with conical toothed washer.
The hitch includes: three 1/2-13 × 1 1/4-inch carriage bolts; three CM-SP10 spacers (0.250 × 1.00 × 2.50 inches, square hole); three HFN 1213 hex flange nuts; one 7/16-inch conical toothed washer; one M12-1.75 × 35mm hex bolt; and two 1/2-inch fishwires.
Yes, the rubber isolators removed from the muffler hangers in Step 1 are saved and reused in Step 10. They are installed onto the muffler hangers in the hitch sideplates to secure the exhaust to the hitch.
Spray lubricant or soapy water will ease the installation of the isolator onto the mount tab. This is recommended to make the final assembly step easier.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify a retightening interval, so contact Curt Technical Support at 1-800-798-0813 for guidance on maintenance schedules.
The hitch is designed for use with ball mount #45518/D-18.
Wear safety glasses at all times while installing this product. Support the exhaust to avoid damaging it when removing and repositioning the exhaust hangers. Do not push the fishwired hardware into the frame rails when maneuvering the hitch into position.
