You will need: a ratchet, torque wrench, 3/4" socket, four 1/2" fishwires, and a die grinder. For a tools reference guide, visit curtmfg.com/trailer-hitch-installation.
The kit includes: one trailer hitch, four 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" carriage bolts, four 1/2"-13 serrated-flange nuts, four square-hole spacers (0.250" x 1.00" x 3.00"), and two round-hole spacers (0.250" x 1.50" x 2.00").
Yes. Remove two rubber plugs from each frame rail and return them to the vehicle owner. Leave the center plugs installed in the frame.
The installation requires drilling and hole enlargement. You will need to enlarge access holes as necessary using a die grinder. The manual uses the fishwire technique to guide bolts and spacers through the frame without losing them inside the rail.
The fishwire technique uses four 1/2" fishwires to guide carriage bolts and spacers through the vehicle frame without losing them inside the rail. Insert the coiled end of the fishwire through the hitch mounting hole and out the access hole, pass it through the spacer, thread the bolt into the coil, kink the wire to keep the spacer separate from the bolt, then pull the fishwire, spacer and bolt through the frame and out the mounting hole. This prevents bolts and spacers from being lost inside the frame rail during installation.
1. Remove two rubber plugs from each frame rail (leave center plugs installed). 2. Enlarge access holes as necessary. Fishwire the carriage bolts and square-hole spacers into the rearmost position, then reverse fishwire the remaining bolts and spacers into the access hole. Leave fishwires attached. 3. Raise the hitch to the frame by feeding the fishwire through the hitch mounting holes and align the mounting holes with the bolts. Use round-hole spacers to level the hitch as necessary. Remove fishwires and loosely install the flange nuts. Be careful not to push the bolts into the frame. 4. Torque all 1/2" fasteners to 110 ft-lb.
Use the two round-hole spacers (0.250" x 1.50" x 2.00") to level the hitch as necessary when raising it to the frame in Step 3. They are positioned between the hitch and frame to adjust the hitch height.
Torque all 1/2" fasteners (carriage bolts and serrated-flange nuts) to 110 ft-lb. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightness and prevent damage to the product or vehicle.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. Do not push the bolts into the frame during assembly. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Proper tools will improve the quality of installation and reduce the time required.
Periodic inspection of the trailer hitch should be performed to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight and structural components are secure. Check fasteners regularly to maintain proper installation.
