A CURT front trailer hitch allows you to use the front end of your vehicle for a variety of towing applications. They can be used for mounting a winch, a snow plow, a number of towing accessories and can even be used for some trailering applications. When space is limited, a front trailer hitch is commonly used to hold a cargo carrier, freeing up space inside the vehicle for extra cargo and making the rear mount receiver available to pull a trailer. At the boat ramp, your boat trailer can be hitched up to the front receiver hitch, giving you better control over the trailer as you launch. Some of the other accessories that can be used with a front tow hitch are the CURT winch mount, step pad, license plate holder, spare tire mount, skid shield and tow hooks. All CURT front trailer hitches provide a useful receiver tube to accept a 2" x 2" shank, and they are commonly used on trucks, vans and SUVs. This front trailer hitch is rated for 5,000 lbs. GTW and 500 lbs. TW. It also has a straight-line pull rating of 9,000 lbs. It is designed to be a custom trailer hitch for certain years of the Ford E150, E250 and E350 Super Duty (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary hardware for a complete installation and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

The Curt 31053 is designed for Ford E-Series vehicles, including E-150, E-250, and E-350 models. However, installation procedures differ between E-150/E-250 and E-350 due to frame rail configuration. Verify your specific model before purchasing, as the manual covers only these three variants.
When used as a weight-carrying hitch, the gross load capacity is 5,000 lbs trailer weight and 500 lbs tongue weight. When used as a straight-line pull (recovery), the maximum line pull is 9,000 lbs. However, you must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower than these ratings.
Required tools are: 3/4" socket, ratchet, torque wrench, and rotary cutting tool. The rotary cutting tool is needed to enlarge existing holes in the vehicle frame and to trim the lower fascia. A 17/32" drill bit is also required for enlarging the forward hole on the vehicle.
The kit includes: 4× 1/2-13 UNC 1-3/4" grade 8 carriage bolts (part 10-10272), 4× 1/2-13 UNC grade 8 serrated flange nuts (part 20-00062), 4× 0.250 × 1.00 × 3.00" square hole spacers (part CM-SP6), and 4× 1/2" fishwire fasteners (part 1_2 FISHWIRE). All fasteners are zinc-plated.
Yes. Step 1 requires removing the underbody panel by removing 4 bolts that secure it. After installation, you may return the panel to the owner or, with permission, trim the underbody panel as shown in the Under Body Panel Detail diagram on page 2.
Yes, drilling is required. You must enlarge the forward hole on the vehicle using a 17/32" drill bit (Step 3). Additionally, you must drill 2× 3/8" holes in the corners of the lower fascia as part of the fascia trim procedure (Step 4c). A rotary cutting tool is also needed to enlarge existing holes and trim the fascia.
The lower fascia must be trimmed to create a 3" square cut-out for the receiver tube. Procedure: (1) locate the center of the fascia left to right and mark 1-1/2" to each side, (2) mark 3" down from the existing opening, (3) drill 2× 3/8" holes in the corners, (4) carefully remove material to create the 3" hole. Refer to the Lower Fascia Trim Detail diagram on page 2 for visual guidance.
For E-150 and E-250 models: Feed the 1/2" carriage bolts and spacers through the access holes at the forward end of the frame rails using the 1/2" fishwire as shown in the E-150 and E-250 Installation Details diagram. The fishwire is used to guide the fasteners through the frame rail openings before raising the hitch into position.
For E-350 models: Loosen (do not remove) the bolts at the end of the frame rail and bumper bracket enough to feed the fasteners into the opening at the end of the frame rail. The bumper may shift downward slightly. After feeding the fasteners into the frame rail, raise the bumper and retighten the bolts. See the E-350 Installation Details diagram on page 1.
All 1/2" fasteners (carriage bolts and hex flange nuts) must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. This is performed in Step 7 after the hitch is raised into position and secured with the 4 nuts.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This maintenance is essential to safe operation and should be performed regularly throughout the life of the hitch.
The front axle GAWR is the maximum weight your vehicle's front axle can safely carry. You must not exceed this rating when using the hitch. Exceeding GAWR may overload the front axle and/or suspension, which could result in accident, property damage, and personal injury. Find your GAWR in your owner's manual or on the specification plate located on the driver's door frame. Measure gross front axle weight by placing the front wheels of your loaded vehicle on a scale.
No. Never use a ball mount as an anchor point for a tow strap or winch cable. Severe personal injury or death could result. Instead, use OEM tow hooks, recovery eyes, or a clevis mount for attachment of a tow strap or winch cable.
For maximum line pull rating, the winch cable must not exceed 15° angle up or down from horizontal, and must not exceed 45° angle left or right from straight ahead. Exceeding these angles may overload the winch, winch mount, and/or front-mounted receiver. See Figures 2 and 3 in the manual for visual reference.
Attach the return cable to the tow hook or recovery eye when using a snatch block. Do not attach the return cable to the winch mount, as this may overload the winch mount and/or front-mounted receiver. See Figure 1 in the manual for the correct configuration.
Operating restrictions include: (1) do not exceed front axle GAWR; (2) reposition front-mounted license plate if obstructed; (3) do not obstruct vehicle lights; (4) allow free airflow into grille opening; (5) rear wheel traction may be reduced, affecting handling—reduce speed and drive with caution; (6) accessories extend the front of the vehicle and may reduce approach angle—use caution when parking and maneuvering; (7) do not obstruct driver view.

Yes, this is normal. The manual states that on E-350 models, "The bumper may shift downward slightly" when you loosen the bolts at the end of the frame rail and bumper bracket to feed the fasteners into the opening. After feeding the fasteners into the frame rail, raise the bumper back to its original position and retighten the bolts.
Periodically check the hitch by attempting to tighten all fasteners with a torque wrench. All 1/2" fasteners should be torqued to 110 ft-lbs. If any fastener turns when you apply torque, it is loose and must be retightened to the specification. Loose fasteners can compromise the structural integrity of the hitch and should be corrected immediately.
