A CURT front trailer hitch allows you to use the front end of your vehicle for a variety of towing applications. They can be used for mounting a winch, a snow plow, a number of towing accessories and can even be used for some trailering applications. When space is limited, a front trailer hitch is commonly used to hold a cargo carrier, freeing up space inside the vehicle for extra cargo and making the rear mount receiver available to pull a trailer. At the boat ramp, your boat trailer can be hitched up to the front receiver hitch, giving you better control over the trailer as you launch. Some of the other accessories that can be used with a front tow hitch are the CURT winch mount, step pad, license plate holder, spare tire mount, skid shield and tow hooks. All CURT front trailer hitches provide a useful receiver tube to accept a 2" x 2" shank, and they are commonly used on trucks, vans and SUVs. This front trailer hitch is rated for 3,000 lbs. GTW and 300 lbs. TW. It also has a straight-line pull rating of 9,000 lbs. It is designed to be a custom trailer hitch for certain years of the Jeep Grand Cherokee (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary hardware for a complete installation and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

CURT offers a variety of high-quality trailer hitches and accessories for select vehicle models. Find the perfect fit for your towing needs at TowUniverse.

Yes, the Curt 31047 is designed for 2005–2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Rocky Mountain Edition SUVs. Installation steps vary depending on your model year (2010 vs. 2005–2009) and whether your vehicle has factory-installed tow hooks. Confirm your vehicle matches these years and model before purchasing.
Yes, the hitch is compatible with vehicles equipped with factory tow hooks. However, the installation process is different: you will remove the factory tow hooks and lock nuts (which are not reinstalled), and fishwire carriage bolts and spacers through the front of each frame rail instead. If your vehicle does not have factory tow hooks, you have the option to enlarge the square mounting holes to accommodate the 1/2" hardware.
When used as a straight-line pull, the gross load capacity is 9,000 lbs maximum. The hitch is rated for 3,000 lbs trailer weight and 300 lbs tongue weight. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, which may be lower. Consult your vehicle's owner manual or specification plate for the final towing limit.
The hitch weight is 120 lbs.
The kit includes: 4× 1/2"-13 UNC carriage bolts, 1-1/2" grade 8 (part 10-10287); 4× 0.250 × 1.25 × 2.50" square hole spacers (CM-SP17); 4× 1/2"-13 UNC serrated flange nuts, grade 8 (part 20-00062); and 4× 1/2" fishwire (part 1_2 FISHWIRE).
Required tools: ratchet, 3/4" and 9/32" sockets, 10 mm and 15 mm sockets, and torque wrench. Optional tools: die grinder (for hole enlargement) and utility knife (for trimming fascia and air dam). Proper tools will greatly improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
Two people may be required to ease installation. The manual notes that using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized Curt installer for additional assistance.
The installation is rated as Challenging. The manual recommends reading all instructions thoroughly before beginning, and notes that two people may be required. If you are hesitant to undertake this task, contact an authorized Curt installer.
Professional installation time is approximately 38 minutes. Novice (DIY) installation time is approximately 60 minutes. Actual time may vary depending on your vehicle's configuration and whether optional modifications such as hole enlargement or fascia trimming are performed.
Bumper removal is required only if your vehicle is equipped with factory-installed tow hooks and you do not choose hole enlargement. If your vehicle has factory tow hooks, you must remove the grill, bumper cover, and headlights to access and remove the tow hooks and frame end caps. If your vehicle does not have factory tow hooks, bumper removal is not required.
Fishwire is used to guide the carriage bolts and spacers through the frame rail mounting holes. You thread the 1/2" fishwire through the carriage bolts and spacers, then use the fishwire as a guide to position the hitch. Once the hitch is in position, you remove the fishwires and secure the bolts with flange nuts. The manual includes a fishwire technique diagram on page 1.
Hole enlargement is optional. If your vehicle has factory-installed tow hooks, no hole enlargement is required—you will fishwire carriage bolts and spacers through the existing holes. If your vehicle does not have factory tow hooks and you prefer to use the 1/2" hardware, you must enlarge the square mounting holes on each frame rail so the 1/2" hardware can pass through. A die grinder is recommended for this optional task.
Fascia trimming is required on 2010 models only. You must trim the fascia so it can be fastened back onto the vehicle crossmember; trim dimensions are approximately 2 in × 1 in × 2 in (see trim diagram on page 7). Air dam trimming is optional for 2005–2009 models: trim an approximate 2 5/8" square from the center bottom portion of the air dam. Trim dimensions are approximate; check fit prior to trimming. A utility knife is recommended for trimming.
All 1/2" hardware (carriage bolts and flange nuts) must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times while installing this product. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning. If you are hesitant to undertake this task, contact an authorized Curt installer. The installation is rated as Challenging and may require two people.
Do not exceed your vehicle's front axle Gross Weight Rating (GAWR). Consult your vehicle's owner manual or the specification plate located on the driver's door frame. Measure gross front axle weight by placing the front wheels of your loaded vehicle on a scale. Exceeding GAWR may overload the front axle and/or suspension, which could result in accident, property damage, and personal injury.
No. Use only OEM tow hooks, recovery eyes, or a clevis mount for attachment of a tow strap or winch cable. Never use a ball and/or ball mount as an anchor point for a tow strap or winch cable—severe personal injury or death could result.
For maximum line pull rating, the winch cable must not exceed 15 degrees angle up or down from horizontal, and 45 degrees angle left or right from straight ahead. Exceeding these angles may overload the winch, winch mount, and/or front-mounted receiver.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. The manual recommends regular inspection to maintain the integrity of the installation.
Rear wheel traction may be reduced when using front-mounted accessories, which could affect handling. Reduce speed and drive with caution. Accessories extend the front of the vehicle and may reduce approach angle—use caution when parking and maneuvering. Do not obstruct vehicle lights, driver view, or free air flow into the grille opening. Reposition the front-mounted license plate if obstructed.
