A CURT front trailer hitch allows you to use the front end of your vehicle for a variety of towing applications. They can be used for mounting a winch, a snow plow, a number of towing accessories and can even be used for some trailering applications. When space is limited, a front trailer hitch is commonly used to hold a cargo carrier, freeing up space inside the vehicle for extra cargo and making the rear mount receiver available to pull a trailer. At the boat ramp, your boat trailer can be hitched up to the front receiver hitch, giving you better control over the trailer as you launch. Some of the other accessories that can be used with a front tow hitch are the CURT winch mount, step pad, license plate holder, spare tire mount, skid shield and tow hooks. All CURT front trailer hitches provide a useful receiver tube to accept a 2" x 2" shank, and they are commonly used on trucks, vans and SUVs. This front trailer hitch is rated for 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. It also has a straight-line pull rating of 9,000 lbs. It is designed to be a custom trailer hitch for certain years of the Jeep Grand Cherokee (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary hardware for a complete installation and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

CURT offers a variety of high-quality trailer hitches and accessories for select vehicle models. Find the perfect fit for your towing needs at TowUniverse.

Yes, the CURT 31048 is designed specifically for 2002–2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee models. Before purchasing, verify your vehicle year and model against the specification plate or owner's manual to confirm fitment.
The hitch has a gross load capacity of 9,000 lbs max when used as a straight line pull. For weight-carrying use, the manual does not specify the exact trailer weight and tongue weight limits. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
The hitch weight is 90 lbs.
Required tools are: ratchet, 18mm socket, 11/16" socket, 4" extension, torque wrench, power drill, and 1/2" drill bit. Using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce installation time.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill a 1/2" diameter hole into the frame at the back slot of the passenger side plate. A power drill and 1/2" drill bit are required.
The kit includes: 8 bolts (7/16"-14 UNC, 1" long, grade 8, part 10-10311); 1 bolt (7/16"-14 UNC, 1-1/4" long, grade 8, part 10-10281); 9 serrated flange nuts (7/16"-14 UNC, grade 8, part 20-00103); 1 square hole spacer (0.250 x 0.88 x 2.25", part CM-SP2); and 1 piece of 7/16" fishwire. The factory stabilizer bar bushing retaining bolts (12mm) must be saved and reused.
No, you do not need to remove the stabilizer bar. You only need to remove the front stabilizer bar bushing retaining bolts (save them for reinstallation) and slide the driver and passenger side plates in between the frame and bushing retaining bracket. The bolts are then reinstalled.
Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
Torque all 12mm bolts to 82 ft-lb and all 7/16" bolts to 59 ft-lb. These torque values must be applied after all bolts are installed.
1. Remove front stabilizer bar bushing retaining bolts and save them. 2. Slide the driver's side plate in between the frame and bushing retaining bracket, then reinstall the 12mm bolts loosely. 3. Repeat for the passenger side plate. 4. Drill a 1/2" diameter hole into the frame at the back slot of the passenger side plate. 5. Fishwire the CM-SP2 spacer and 7/16" x 1.25" carriage bolt through the hole on the outside of the frame. 6. Slide the hitch center section between the side plates and connect using 7/16" carriage bolts and nuts. 7. Torque all 12mm bolts to 82 ft-lb and all 7/16" bolts to 59 ft-lb.
Leave all hardware loose until all bolts are installed. Only after the hitch center section is fully positioned between the side plates and all bolts are in place should you torque all 12mm bolts to 82 ft-lb and all 7/16" bolts to 59 ft-lb.
Locate the back slot in the passenger side plate and drill a 1/2" diameter hole into the frame at that location. The hole is drilled on the outside of the frame, and a 7/16" x 1.25" carriage bolt with the CM-SP2 spacer is then fishwired through it.
Yes, drilling a 1/2" hole into the vehicle frame is a permanent modification. This hole cannot be easily reversed without professional frame repair.
Fishwire is a flexible wire tool used to route and position hardware through tight spaces. For the CURT 31048, 7/16" fishwire is required to thread the CM-SP2 spacer and 7/16" x 1.25" carriage bolt through the drilled hole in the frame. The fishwire is included in the kit.
After installation, periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. Verify that all bolts are torqued to specification (12mm bolts to 82 ft-lb and 7/16" bolts to 59 ft-lb) and that the hitch is securely mounted between the frame rails.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify an exact interval, but regular inspection before towing is recommended.
Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The CURT 31048 has a gross load capacity of 9,000 lbs max when used as a straight line pull, but your vehicle's manufacturer specifications take precedence. Consult your owner's manual or the specification plate on your driver's door frame for your vehicle's towing limits.
The front axle GAWR is the maximum weight your vehicle's front axle can safely carry. Exceeding it may overload the front axle and/or suspension, resulting in accident, property damage and personal injury. Find your vehicle's GAWR in the owner's manual or on the specification plate located on your driver's door frame. Measure your gross front axle weight by placing the front wheels of your loaded vehicle on a scale.
The CURT 31048 can be used for vehicle recovery and winching, but only with OEM tow hooks, recovery eyes, or a clevis mount for attachment of a tow strap or winch cable. Never use a ball or ball mount as an anchor point—severe personal injury or death could result. Observe the winch manufacturer's recommendations, cautions and warnings. The winch cable must not exceed 15 degrees up or down from horizontal or 45 degrees left or right from straight ahead. Do not attach the return cable to the winch mount; attach it to the tow hook or recovery eye when using a snatch block.
Reposition your front mounted license plate if obstructed by the hitch. Do not obstruct vehicle lights. Ensure the hitch allows free air flow into the grille opening and does not obstruct your driver view.
The hitch extends the front of your vehicle, which may reduce your approach angle. Use caution when parking and maneuvering. Additionally, rear wheel traction may be reduced when the hitch is in use. Reduce speed and drive with caution.
Professional installation takes approximately 45 minutes. Novice (DIY) installation takes approximately 90 minutes. Actual time may vary depending on your experience and vehicle condition.
The installation difficulty is rated as moderate. The kit requires drilling, use of multiple tools, and careful torque specifications. Two people may be required to ease installation. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer.
Safety glasses should be worn at all times while installing this product. Read all instructions thoroughly before beginning installation. Using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
