If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Nissan Murano (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). You will need a Phillips screwdriver, flat blade screwdriver, and panel trim removal tool. The manual also mentions you may need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the ground wire screw if a suitable existing screw is not available.
Open the tailgate and fold down the rear seats. Remove the floor coverings, spare tire compartment cover, and storage trays on each side of the spare tire. Remove the rear scuff panel fasteners and the panel itself. Remove the 10mm bolts securing the cargo loops on each side, and remove the plastic fasteners and rear trim panels. These items must be reinstalled after installation.
Drilling is not always required. You should first locate a suitable grounding point near the taillight connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. Only if no suitable existing screw is available should you drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided ground screw. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items hidden behind or under surfaces to avoid damage and personal injury.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. The manual specifies that you should locate the 'Tow Lamp (30A)' fuse location in the fuse box to the left of the battery and insert the provided 10-amp fuse. If a 30-amp fuse is already in that location, remove it and replace it with the provided 10-amp fuse. Do not exceed 10 amps, as exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.
Locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connectors behind the removed trim panels. The custom wiring harness has two ends: one with a yellow wire for the driver side and one with a green wire for the passenger side. Insert each harness end between the separated taillight connectors, ensuring the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Take care not to damage the locking tabs during insertion.
The white ground wire should be secured to a suitable grounding point near the taillight connector. This can be an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame, or you can drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The area should be free of rust, dirt and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw.
The black converter box should be mounted in the spare tire compartment close to the back of the vehicle on the driver side. It is adhered using the provided double-sided tape. Make sure the location does not interfere with anything removed during installation.
On the driver's side of the vehicle, locate the existing factory wiring harness and find the single pin connector. This connector will mate with the connector on the black power wire. Insert the connector into the vehicle's connector, ensuring it is fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
When in use, route the 4-flat connector to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll it up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness functions properly. Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or by connecting a properly wired trailer. This will verify that the signal and tail/running circuits are working correctly.
