If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Honda Civic coupe (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. The kit includes a T-connector with yellow, red, and green wires; a black converter box; double-sided tape; cable ties; an eyelet; a screw; and a 4-flat wire connector. The eyelet and screw are used to secure the white ground wire if drilling is required.
You will need a drill with a 3/32" bit (only if a suitable existing ground point is not available), a screwdriver, and basic hand tools. The manual does not specify additional tools required.
Open the trunk and remove the rear access covers on both sides of the vehicle. Remove the cargo area floor covering and rear scuff panel. Inside the rear access panel, you will locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness. The connectors will be similar to those on the T-connector.
On the driver's side, separate the connectors from the backside of the taillight assembly. Insert the T-connector ends with the yellow and red wires in-between the separated housings.
Route the T-connector end with the green wire out from under the driver's side trim panel, across the removed scuff panel, and under the passenger side trim panel. On the passenger side, separate the 3-pin connector and insert the green wire only.
Adhere the black converter box to the frame of the car using the double-sided tape provided with the kit.
Secure any loose parts of the T-connector with the cable ties provided in the kit.
Drilling is required only if a suitable existing ground point is not available near the driver's side connector. If needed, drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire using the eyelet and screw provided.
Drill a 3/32" hole for the white ground wire if an existing screw with nut in the vehicle's frame is not available.
The T-connector includes yellow, red, green, and white wires. Yellow and red wires are inserted on the driver's side; green wire is routed across to the passenger side; white wire is the ground wire, secured to the vehicle frame with an eyelet and screw. Route the 4-flat wire to the center of the vehicle and out the trunk when in use. When not in use, roll it up and store it in an out-of-the-way location in the rear cargo area.
