A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Subaru Legacy sedan (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. The kit includes a T-connector harness with yellow and green wire ends, a black converter box, double-sided tape, cable ties, an eyelet, a screw, and a 4-flat wire connector. The yellow wire end connects to the driver's side taillight, the green wire end to the passenger side, and the 4-flat wire routes to the center of the vehicle for trailer connection.
Open the trunk and remove the spare tire compartment cover, jack storage tray, and rear scuff panel (by removing plastic fasteners and pulling up). On both sides, remove the cargo loops holding the felt trunk liner in place, then pull back the trunk liner to access the vehicle's taillight wiring harness.
On the driver's side, carefully separate the vehicle's taillight connectors without damaging the locking tabs. Insert the T-connector end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors, then fully insert both connectors and lock the tabs in place. Repeat this process on the passenger side using the green wire end of the T-connector.
Drilling is optional. Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle's frame. If no existing point is available, drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Before drilling, verify that no miscellaneous items are hidden behind or under the surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Adhere the black converter box to the frame of the car using the double-sided tape provided in the kit.
Route the 4-flat wire to the center of the vehicle and out the trunk when in use. When not in use, roll it up and store it in an out-of-the-way location in the trunk.
The white wire is the ground wire. It must be secured to a suitable grounding point near the connector, either to an existing screw with nut in the vehicle's frame or to a newly drilled 3/32" hole using the eyelet and screw provided.
Basic tools include a screwdriver (for removing plastic fasteners and securing the ground wire screw). If you choose to drill a ground hole, you will need a drill with a 3/32" bit. The manual does not specify additional tools required.
