A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Ford Focus hatchback (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). Open the rear hatch and remove: all floor covers and foam trays in the rear cargo area, the rear scuff panel (held by 4 plastic fasteners), the felt liner behind the taillights, the plastic wing nuts holding the taillights, and the grommets on both sides of the vehicle. Take care not to damage the taillight alignment tabs when removing them.
You may need to drill one 3/32" hole if a suitable existing grounding point (such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle's frame) is not available near the taillight connector. Before drilling, verify that miscellaneous items hidden behind or under surfaces will not be damaged.
If you need to drill a grounding hole, drill a 3/32" hole in the vehicle's frame near the taillight connector. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and screw provided with the kit.
On the driver side, locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connector. Separate the connectors carefully without damaging the locking tabs. Insert the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Remove the grommet on both sides of the vehicle and make a small slit from the outside towards the center. Route the T-Connector end with the yellow wire through the opening made by the removed driver-side grommet. Route the T-Connector end with the green wire through the opening made by the removed passenger-side grommet. Replace each grommet, routing the wires through the slit made in the removal step.
The black power wire routes from the vehicle's battery to the converter box. The manual references the CME-PCL-INS instruction sheet for detailed routing and connection instructions. Review that sheet for the specific battery connection point and routing path.
Adhere the black converter box behind the felt trunk liner in the vehicle's rear cargo area using the double-sided tape provided with the kit.
