If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Honda Accord with LED taillights (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. The Curt 56173 is a custom wiring harness that connects your Honda's taillight circuits to a trailer connector. It includes signal circuits rated at 3.0 amps per side and tail/running circuits rated at 6.0 amps total. The harness terminates in a 4-flat connector for trailer use.
You need only a flat blade screwdriver. The kit includes a custom wiring harness, a black converter box, a provided screw and ring terminal for grounding, double-sided tape for mounting the converter box, cable ties for securing loose wires, and a 4-flat dust cover.
The harness connects behind the taillight housings inside the trunk. The driver-side harness end (with yellow wire) connects behind the driver-side taillight, and the passenger-side harness end (with green wire) connects behind the passenger-side taillight. Both ends insert between the separated vehicle taillight connectors, with locking tabs fully engaged.
The white ground wire provides the ground connection for the wiring harness. It must be secured to a suitable grounding point near the taillight connector using the provided ring terminal and screw. You can use an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole if needed. The grounding surface must be free of rust, dirt and paint.
Drilling may be required. Step 6 instructs you to locate a suitable grounding point using an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole if no existing screw is available. Before drilling, you must check for miscellaneous items hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided ground screw. The area must be free of rust, dirt and paint before securing the white ground wire using the ring terminal.
Mount the black converter box on a flat, clean surface that is out of the path of spray and debris from the rear wheels and road. Use the provided double-sided tape to adhere it. Mounting the box in a protected area is critical—failure to do so can cause loss of warranty, product failure, overheating and potential fire.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a maximum 10-amp fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
Signal circuits are rated at 3.0 amps per side. Tail and running circuits are rated at 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed these ratings or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
When in use, route the 4-flat connector to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll it up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
1. Open the trunk and remove all trunk floor coverings. 2. Remove the rear scuff panel by pulling out on the bottom and then up, taking care not to damage the alignment tabs. 3. On both sides of the trunk, remove the plastic fasteners securing the felt trunk liner. 4. Pull back the felt liner to access the vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors.
Separate the vehicle taillight connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring harness end (yellow wire for driver side, green wire for passenger side) between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness functions properly before testing.
Reinstall all items removed during installation in reverse order. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
