If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Chevy Malibu (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. The harness is rated for 7.5 amps per side for signal circuits and 7.5 amps total for tail and running circuits. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower, as exceeding the rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.
You will need: a panel trim removal tool, a cutting tool, a wire stripper, and a wire crimper. These tools are required to remove trim panels, prepare wires, and make electrical connections during installation.
The harness includes: the custom wiring harness with yellow and green wire ends, a black converter box, a white ground wire with ring terminal, a provided screw for grounding, double-sided tape for the converter box, a 4-flat connector, a 4-flat dust cover, and cable ties for securing loose wires.
Drilling may be required. You must locate a suitable grounding point near the taillight connector. If an existing screw with nut is not available in the vehicle frame, you will need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided grounding screw. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided grounding screw. The grounding point should be located near the taillight connector on a flat spot inside the vehicle frame, and the area should be free of rust, dirt and paint before securing the white ground wire with the ring terminal.
Locate a flat spot inside the vehicle near the taillight and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The converter box should be positioned to allow the wiring harness to route properly from the taillight connectors.
When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle and out of the trunk. When not in use, roll up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location inside the trunk. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
Start on the driver side: remove trunk floor coverings, remove the scuff panel, remove fasteners from the interior felt liner, locate the taillight wiring harness connectors, separate them, and insert the custom harness end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors. Secure the white ground wire to a suitable grounding point. Then route the harness end with the green wire to the passenger side and repeat steps 3–5 using the green wire end.
Separate the vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring harness end (yellow wire for driver side, green wire for passenger side) between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. The custom harness connectors will be similar to the vehicle's original connectors.
Remove the scuff panel by pulling out on the bottom and then up. Take care not to damage the alignment tabs on the back of the panel, as damage may affect proper reinstallation.
All steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness functions properly. Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. This will verify that all connections are correct and the harness is operating as intended.
