Choosing the right gooseneck hitch is only half the battle in preparing your pickup truck for towing a gooseneck trailer. CURT gooseneck hitches are a premium option in the heavy-duty towing industry, but they are only one of the members in the heavyweight tag team that is CURT gooseneck towing. While a gooseneck hitch gets all the glory above the floor of your truck bed, gooseneck installation brackets provide sure footing and a solid foundation for that oversized gooseneck trailer. Gooseneck installation brackets work by bolting onto the frame of your truck, typically using pre-existing holes. With a set of brackets firmly bolted on, a gooseneck hitch is able to be attached and is given the strength it needs to manage the massive amount of weight of a gooseneck trailer. With so many gooseneck hitch options available from CURT, we wanted to make sure we offered the gooseneck installation products needed to give you a complete towing package. Our installation brackets fit multiple vehicles and hitch heads. This particular set of gooseneck installation brackets is able to work with CURT Double Lock, Quick Goose II and under-bed folding ball gooseneck hitches. It is rated to the vehicle's maximum gross trailer weight capacity and provides a custom fit for certain years of the Ford F150 (see application info to verify fitment). Measure 45 3/8 inches from the tail gate end of the truck bed (hook the tape measure over the back of the truck box; do not measure from the edge of the tailgate). Mark the center point between the wheel wells. This location is critical and will position the ball 4–6 inches in front of the axle. Measure, mark, and cut carefully. If your truck has a plastic bed liner, you may drill through both, but it is more difficult to keep the liner from moving while cutting.
Make a 4-inch hole using a 4-inch hole saw, or by marking a 4-inch circle and cutting it out with a saber saw equipped with a metal cutting blade. Note: For C-630/C-640 models, use a 3 5/8-inch hole instead.
Slide the front cross arm between the truck bed and truck frame on the passenger side in an inverted V position with the holes of the arm towards the rear of the truck. Slide through until the cross arm spans the truck frame, then push the cross arm towards the front of the truck.
Repeat the cross arm installation procedure for the rear cross arm, making sure to position the holes in the angle iron towards the front of the truck. After spanning the frame, slide the cross arm towards the rear of the truck.
Raise the center section in position between the cross arms with the ball cylinder towards the rear of the truck. The round hitch receiver that protrudes from the top of the center section must fit through the hole in the truck bed. An overhead lifting device such as a chain fall, engine hoist, or cable come-a-long can be used to lift the center section into place by looping rope or chain through the hole in the truck bed floor and attaching it to the round hitch receiver tube. Maintaining upward pressure may facilitate fastening the crossmember to the center section, especially if the truck bed floor has been distorted downward from heavy use. Disconnect the lifting device before squaring the center section across the frame, installing the sideplates, and torquing fasteners.
Using 8× 1/2-inch carriage bolts and flange nuts, attach the center section to the square holes in both cross arms. Install these fasteners finger tight only at this stage; do not torque them until step 7.
Square the center section and cross arms across the frame. Hang the sideplates from the 1/2-inch studs extending from the rear cross arm and fasten them with 1/2-inch flange nuts finger tight only. Next, bolt the front flange of each sideplate to the front cross arm using a 1/2-inch × 1 1/2-inch hex bolt, 1/2-inch washer, and 1/2-inch flange nut. The two holes at the front of each sideplate should now be aligned with two holes in the frame behind the shock and shock mount.
Use the 2-inch U-bolt with one flange nut placed loosely to one end of the U-bolt. Place the opposite end into the smaller hole at the front of the sideplate and twist through the frame until the threaded end protrudes out the other hole of the sideplate. Place the U-bolt bushing over the U-bolt and into the hole of the sideplate and frame, making sure to penetrate the frame with the bushing so the sideplate rests flat against the frame. Attach a 1/2-inch flange nut and leave finger tight only at this stage.
Torque all 1/2-inch fasteners to 110 ft-lbs, including the U-bolt flange nuts and all carriage bolts. Torque in the following order: first, torque the U-bolts to the sideplates and frame; second, torque the 8 carriage bolts from the cross arms to the center section; third, torque the sideplates to the front and rear cross arms.
The manual does not specify a towing capacity. You must not exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity for your 2004–2014 Ford 1/2 ton truck. Consult your vehicle's owner manual or the manufacturer for the correct towing weight limit.
Use the clearance calculation formula: (cab to ball center) − 1/2 (trailer width) = (minimum clearance). If there is an overhang from the coupler, use: [(cab to ball center) − (coupler overhang)] − 1/2 (trailer width) = (minimum clearance). If the result is positive, the trailer will not interfere with the cab. If negative, the trailer will interfere. The manual provides example calculations and a worksheet to complete your own calculation. Generally, 8-foot-wide trailers taper to 6 feet at the coupler, and 7-foot-wide trailers taper to 5 feet at the coupler.
Removal of rear window accessories may be required. Inspect your truck during installation to determine if any rear window accessories interfere with the hitch components or the inverted ball position.
Maintenance is required every 30 days or prior to use: (1) keep the hitch ball lubricated regularly using silicone spray or equivalent to prevent wear and rust; (2) keep the hitch assembly free of dirt and other foreign debris; (3) check for proper torque on all nuts and bolts before each use and check for excessive wear; (4) check for ball wear before each use. Do not tow a trailer with worn or damaged parts.
After installation, verify that all fasteners have been torqued to 110 ft-lbs in the correct sequence (U-bolts first, then carriage bolts, then sideplate fasteners). Check that the center section is squared across the frame and that the sideplates rest flat against the frame. Verify that the round hitch receiver protrudes correctly through the truck bed hole. On two-wheel drive trucks, perform a clearance check when the truck is both loaded and unloaded to ensure the inverted ball does not interfere with the differential. On short bed trucks, verify adequate turning clearance between the front of your trailer and the truck cab using the clearance calculation formula.
