If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Chevy Malibu (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. The Curt 56176 includes: a T-Connector harness with yellow and green wire ends, a white ground wire with eyelet, a black converter box, double-sided tape for mounting the converter box, a screw for securing the ground wire eyelet, and cable ties for securing loose wires. A separate CME-PCL-INS sheet is included with battery connection routing information.
Open the trunk and remove all trunk floor covers. Remove the rear scuff panel by pulling out on the bottom and then up. On both sides of the trunk, remove the plastic fastener holding the felt trunk liner in place. Pull back the trunk liner to locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connectors.
Locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connectors in the trunk behind the trunk liner. Separate the connector from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors on the driver's side. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat on the passenger side using the T-Connector end with the green wire, routing it behind the trunk liner and removed scuff panel.
Locate a flat spot on the frame of the vehicle and adhere the black converter box using the double-sided tape provided. The converter module must be mounted inside the vehicle or in a protected area similar to a vehicle interior. Do not mount it in an exposed location, as this can cause loss of warranty, product failure, lamp malfunction, overheating and potential fire.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle's frame. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" hole and secure the eyelet of the white ground wire using the screw provided.
Drilling may be required. If a suitable existing grounding point (such as a screw with nut in the vehicle's frame) is not available, you will need to drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire eyelet. Before drilling, verify that no miscellaneous items are hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
The battery connection must be fuse protected at 10 amp maximum. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire. Do not exceed the tow vehicle's lamp load rating or the product rating, whichever is lower.
The Curt 56176 has the following maximum amperage ratings: Signal Circuits – 3.0 amps per side; Tail/Running Lights – 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed these ratings or the tow vehicle's lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Check your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for your vehicle's lamp load rating.
Route the 4-flat connector out from under the felt trunk liner to the center of the vehicle when in use. When not in use, roll it up and store in an out-of-the-way location.
