If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Chevy Traverse (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. You have a picture in mind of your next destination -- maybe it's the boat landing at your favorite fishing spot, maybe it's a campsite that overlooks one of nature's masterpieces, or maybe it's the next big jobsite. However, turning that picture into a reality takes more than just daydreaming. It takes a solid connection and the right amount of power. CURT custom wiring is made with some of the most sophisticated technology in the industry and is designed to install with ease, giving you a long-lasting electrical connection for your towing hitch setup.

The CURT Custom Wiring Harness, 4-Way Flat Output, Select Chevrolet Traverse Trailer Connector Kit (Part #BKDK56181) Typical installation time is 30-60 minutes. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, the Curt 56181 is designed for Chevrolet Traverse passenger car (P) configuration. The harness connects to the vehicle's existing taillight wiring connectors behind both the driver and passenger side taillights inside the trunk.
Chevrolet Traverse (passenger car configuration).
The Curt 56181 is a custom wiring harness that integrates with your vehicle's taillight system to provide trailer lighting control. It includes a converter box that processes signals from your vehicle's brake, turn, and running lights to control trailer lights through a 4-flat connector.
You will need: 9/32" socket, ratchet, panel trim removal tool, Phillips screwdriver, and sealant (not provided). A 3/32" drill bit is also required if you need to drill a pilot hole for the ground wire screw.
Drilling may be required. You must locate a suitable grounding point near the grommet—either an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw if no suitable point exists.
The harness includes: custom wiring harness ends with yellow and green wires, a black converter box, a white ground wire with ring terminal, a provided screw for grounding, double-sided tape for mounting the converter box, cable ties for securing loose wires, and a 4-flat dust cover. Sealant is not provided.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a maximum 10-amp fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
Signal circuits (turn and brake) are rated at 3.0 amps per side. Tail and running circuits are rated at 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed these ratings or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
10-amp maximum. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire.
Open the tailgate and remove trunk floor coverings. Remove the rear scuff panel by pulling out at the bottom then up. On the driver side, remove two screws securing cargo loops and remove the interior side wall inspection cover to locate the vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors. On the outside, remove the taillight assembly cover, remove two screws securing the taillight, and gently pull the light straight back to access the connectors behind it.
Locate the grommet behind the taillight where vehicle taillight wiring passes from inside the cabin to the taillight. Remove the grommet and cut a slit large enough to route the custom wiring harness through. Route the harness ends with yellow and green wires out through the grommet opening and through the slit. Insert the yellow wire harness end between the separated taillight connectors, ensuring connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Repeat the driver side steps (3-5) on the passenger side. Use a pry tool to remove protective caps covering fasteners below the taillight, then remove three fasteners securing the rear fascia. Route the custom wiring harness end with the green wire to the passenger side behind the loosened rear fascia. Insert the green wire harness end between the separated connectors, ensuring they are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
In the interior of the vehicle, locate a suitable grounding point near the grommet, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The area must be free of rust, dirt, and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw.
Adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The box must be mounted in a protected area. Failure to mount in a protected area can cause loss of warranty, product failure, overheating, and potential fire.
Yes. You must remove the grommet behind the taillight and cut a slit large enough to route the custom wiring harness through. After installation, you must reseat the grommet and use sealant to seal the cut in the grommet and around all wires.
If a suitable existing grounding point is not available, drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
The custom wiring harness has three wire colors: yellow wire connects to the driver side taillight connector, green wire connects to the passenger side taillight connector, and white wire is the ground wire that must be secured to a grounding point in the vehicle frame.
Route the black power wire from the vehicle battery as shown on the included CME-PCL-INS sheet. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a maximum 10-amp fuse.
Test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. All installation steps must be followed to ensure the wiring harness will function properly.
Reseat the grommet and use sealant (not provided) to seal the cut in the grommet and around all wires. Reinstall all items removed during installation. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion. When not in use, roll up and store the 4-flat connector in a convenient, out-of-the-way location. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties.
Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury. Ensure the area where you ground the white wire is free of rust, dirt, and paint. Mount the converter box in a protected area to prevent loss of warranty, product failure, overheating, and potential fire. Do not exceed the product rating (10-amp fuse, 3.0 amps per signal circuit, 6.0 amps total for tail/running circuits) or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
Yes. You must remove the taillight assembly cover, remove two screws securing the taillight, and gently pull the light straight back to access the wiring connectors behind it.
Yes, on both sides. Use a pry tool to remove protective caps covering fasteners below each taillight, then remove three fasteners securing the rear fascia on each side to route the wiring harness.
