If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Kia EV6 (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. You have a picture in mind of your next destination -- maybe it's the boat landing at your favorite fishing spot, maybe it's a campsite that overlooks one of nature's masterpieces, or maybe it's the next big jobsite. However, turning that picture into a reality takes more than just daydreaming. It takes a solid connection and the right amount of power. CURT custom wiring is made with some of the most sophisticated technology in the industry and is designed to install with ease, giving you a long-lasting electrical connection for your towing hitch setup.

The Curt 56499 is a powered converter system that enables trailer wiring functionality on passenger cars. It converts the vehicle's electrical signals to power a trailer's lighting and braking systems. The system includes a converter module, wiring harnesses with color-coded leads (yellow for left turn, green for right turn, red for brake, brown for taillight), a 4-flat connector for trailer attachment, and grounding hardware. It is designed for 12-volt negative ground vehicles only.
The Curt 56499 is designed for passenger cars with 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. The manual states it is for 'Passenger Cars (P)' and specifies that the converter system must be used only on 12-volt negative ground systems. The manual does not list specific vehicle makes, models, or years. Consult the product fitment database or contact Curt Manufacturing for compatibility with your specific vehicle.
No. The manual explicitly states: 'This converter system is to be used only on 12 volt negative ground systems.' Do not attempt installation on positive ground vehicles, as it will not function correctly and may cause electrical damage.
The following tools are required: panel removal tool, wire cutter, ratchet, wire stripper, 10mm socket, crimping tool, and flathead screwdriver. The manual also recommends an abrasive pad or paper to remove rust and paint from the grounding point, and notes that proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce time required.
The kit includes: two converter modules (one with yellow wire, one with black converter box), a 4-flat connector, a 4-flat dust cover, double-sided tape for mounting modules, a white ground wire with ring terminal, a black power wire, cable ties for securing wires, a ground screw, a fuse holder with 15-amp fuse, and butt connectors. The manual shows a hardware photo but does not itemize every component; refer to the product packaging or contact Curt Manufacturing for a complete parts list.
Yes. The manual requires that you disconnect the negative battery terminal before wiring the power wire. Step 1 instructs you to remove the ground wire from the battery and fasten it down and away from the battery while completing the installation. The negative battery cable must remain disconnected until all other wiring steps are complete and the fuse is installed.
You must remove: the battery access panel (under the hood), the false floor in the rear hatch, one access door (pulled straight up), two threshold fasteners (using a flathead screwdriver), the threshold trim panel (using a trim tool), and four interior floor bolts (using a 10mm socket). You will also need to loosen both side panels to route wires between the panel and vehicle body. The manual notes that battery location may vary by vehicle.
Do not lay tools across the positive battery terminal (typically marked with red covers or a red '+' symbol), as this can cause a ground short resulting in sparks and/or electrical shocks. Disconnect the negative battery cable before wiring the power wire. Fasten the disconnected ground wire down and away from the battery during installation. Do not reconnect the battery until all wiring is complete and the 15-amp fuse is installed.
The yellow-wire module is mounted on the driver side. After routing the yellow wire behind the driver-side wall panel and connecting it to the taillight housing and factory wiring, locate a flat spot in the lower compartment and adhere the module using the provided double-sided tape. The manual does not specify an exact location beyond 'a flat spot in the lower compartment.'
The black converter box is mounted on the passenger side. Locate a flat spot near where the speaker sub is located and adhere the converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The manual does not specify an exact location beyond 'near where the speaker sub is located.'
On the driver side, locate the vehicle's taillight wiring connectors (which will be similar to those on the converter product). Separate the connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Connect the yellow-wire housing to both the taillight housing and factory wiring. Repeat on the passenger side with the green-wire housing. The manual does not provide detailed connector specifications; if connectors do not match, contact Curt Manufacturing.
The wire color coding is: Yellow = Left turn, Green = Right turn, Red = Brake, Brown = Taillight. These colors are used on both the internal wiring harnesses and the 4-flat connector that attaches to the trailer.
Drilling may be required for the ground wire connection. Step 8 instructs you to locate a grounding point such as an existing screw or bolt in the vehicle frame, or drill a 3/32-inch pilot hole if no existing fastener is available. The area must be free from rust, dirt, and paint (use an abrasive pad or paper to clean it). Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
The pilot hole size is 3/32 inch. This hole is drilled only if no existing screw or bolt is available on the vehicle frame for the ground wire ring terminal. The area must be cleaned of rust, dirt, and paint before drilling.
No permanent modifications are required. The installation involves removing and reinstalling interior trim panels, accessing existing wiring connectors, and routing wires through existing interior spaces. The only potential drilling is for the ground wire connection (3/32-inch pilot hole), which uses an existing fastener if available. All removed interior components must be reinstalled after installation.
The signal circuits (left turn, right turn, and brake) are rated at 3.0 amps per side maximum.
The tail and running light circuits are rated at 6.0 amps total maximum.
The maximum fuse rating is 15 amps. The manual states: 'The battery connection must be fuse-protected, 15-amp max. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire.' The fuse holder with 15-amp fuse is included and must be installed after all other wiring steps are complete.
The power wire must be 12 gauge (12 GA) or larger. The manual specifies: 'Route 12 GA wire to vehicle battery location, taking care to avoid any pinch points and hot or rotating components.'
Route the black power wire from the vehicle battery as shown on the 'Powered Converter Lead Instruction Sheet' (page 6 of the manual). The wire must be 12 gauge or larger. Take care to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components. When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the wire from sharp edges. Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties.
Locate a grounding point such as an existing screw or bolt in the vehicle frame. If no existing fastener is available, drill a 3/32-inch pilot hole. Clean the area of rust, dirt, and paint using an abrasive pad or paper. Secure the white ground wire (which has a ring terminal) to the vehicle body using the provided ground screw or an existing fastener. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
The ring terminal is a crimped connector at the end of the white ground wire that allows secure attachment to a vehicle frame fastener (screw or bolt). It provides a solid electrical connection to ground the converter system. The ring terminal is attached to the vehicle body using the provided ground screw or an existing fastener.
P3 is behind the driver side taillight housing, inside of trunk. P4 is behind the passenger side taillight housing, inside of trunk. These are the locations where the converter's yellow-wire and green-wire modules connect to the vehicle's factory taillight wiring connectors.
The manual does not specify a maximum towing load. It states: 'Do not exceed product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.' Consult the vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for the vehicle's towing capacity and lamp load rating. Contact Curt Manufacturing for the product's maximum rating.
When in use, route the 4-flat connector with the center of the vehicle and out of the hatch to the trailer, staying clear of the hatch's latching mechanism. When not in use, roll up the connector and store it in a convenient, out-of-the-way location. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
After connecting the 12-volt power wire to the harness, verify that the harness is functioning by attaching the battery and testing with a test light, 4-flat tester, or a functioning trailer. The manual notes that all steps must be followed to ensure the product will function properly. Once installed, test for proper function before towing.
After installation, verify that all removed interior components are reinstalled, the negative battery terminal is reconnected, the 4-flat dust cover is installed, and all loose wires are secured with the provided cable ties. Test the system with a test light, 4-flat tester, or functioning trailer to confirm proper operation before towing.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. The manual does not specify an inspection interval. Secure any loose wires with cable ties and ensure the 4-flat dust cover is in place to help prevent corrosion.
The Curt 56499 is designed for passenger cars with 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. Consult the product fitment database or contact Curt Manufacturing with your vehicle's year, make, and model to confirm compatibility.
