If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Nissan Sentra (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. The Curt 56500 is a powered converter system that allows you to connect a trailer to a passenger car by tapping into the vehicle's existing taillight wiring. It converts the vehicle's taillight signals to a 4-flat trailer connector, enabling the trailer lights to function when connected. The system includes a converter box, custom wiring harness with yellow and green wires, power lead, ground wire, fuse holder, cable ties, double-sided tape, and a 4-flat dust cover.
The Curt 56500 is designed for 12-volt negative ground systems only. Do not use this converter on any other electrical system configuration. Check your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer to confirm your vehicle has a 12-volt negative ground system before purchasing.
The Curt 56500 is designed for passenger cars with factory taillight connectors that can be accessed from inside the trunk. The installation requires access to wiring locations P3 and P4 (behind driver and passenger side taillight housings, inside the trunk). Compatibility may vary depending on your specific vehicle model and year. Consult the manufacturer or a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your vehicle before purchasing.
You will need: ratchet, wire cutter, 10mm socket, crimp tool, panel trim removal tool, and wire stripper. These tools are required to remove trunk trim, disconnect and reconnect battery terminals, separate taillight connectors, and prepare wiring connections. Yes, you must disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery while completing the installation process. Reconnect the negative battery terminal only after all other installation steps are complete and the fuse has been installed.
You must remove the floor board to expose the spare tire, then loosen and remove the threshold straight up. Pull the trunk liner toward the inside of the trunk on both sides to expose the taillight wiring. Use a panel trim removal tool to remove three push fasteners on each side of the trunk liner and two push fasteners in the threshold.
Starting on the driver side, locate the taillight housing and separate the connectors, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Locate the harness with the yellow wire and insert the custom wiring harness between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat this process on the passenger side with the green wire harness.
Locate a flat spot on the driver side behind the felt liner and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The converter box should be positioned securely and out of the way to avoid interference with vehicle components.
Route the 12 GA black power wire from the vehicle battery to the converter, taking care to avoid any pinch points and hot or rotating components. Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the provided cable ties. When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the wire from sharp edges. Connect the ring terminal to the positive (+) battery terminal. Install the fuse holder with a 10-amp fuse after all other steps are complete.
