A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Toyota Avalon, Toyota RAV4 and Lexus ES300h (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). Open the tailgate and remove the trunk floor covering and rear cargo area cover. Remove the rear scuff panel by pulling out on the bottom and then up. Remove fasteners from the plastic cargo tray on the driver side. Remove the rear cargo loop, Phillips screws, and 10mm bolt holding the rear trim panel. Pull back on the top and bottom rear trim to locate the taillight wiring harness connectors.
Open the trunk and remove the trunk floor covering and rear cargo area cover. Remove the two fasteners securing the rear scuff panel. Remove the scuff panel by pulling out on the bottom and then up. Pull back the felt liner to locate the taillight wiring harness connectors.
Separate the vehicle taillight wiring harness connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring harness end with the yellow wire (driver side) or green wire (passenger side) between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Mount the converter box on a flat, clean surface that is out of the path of spray and debris from the rear wheels and road. Use the provided double-sided tape to adhere it. Failure to mount in a protected area can cause loss of warranty, product failure, overheating, and potential fire.
You may need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole if a suitable existing grounding point is not available. Look for an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame near the connector. If drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
