If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Toyota Corolla (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. Yes. Disconnect the negative battery terminal in the engine compartment on the driver side before beginning installation. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery while completing the installation. Reconnect it only after all other steps are complete and the fuse is installed.
Remove the floor coverings, skid plate (secured by two push fasteners), and trunk liner (secured by three small push fasteners in the sidewall and one in the floor). Repeat the trunk liner removal on both sides of the vehicle. You will also need to pull back the sidewall panels to access the taillight housings.
On the driver side, locate the taillight housing and separate the connectors carefully without damaging the locking tabs. Install the yellow wire between the separated connectors, then fully insert the connectors with locking tabs in place. Repeat on the passenger side with the green wire. Route the green wire along the back of the trunk below the skid plate to reach the passenger side.
Locate a flat spot on the vehicle on the driver side and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape.
When in use, route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle. When not in use, roll it up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location. Secure any loose wires with the provided cable ties. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Yellow wire = left turn signal; Green wire = right turn signal; Red wire = brake signal; Brown wire = tail light/running light. These color-coded leads connect to the converter box and ultimately to the 4-flat trailer connector.
The power wire is 12 GA (12 gauge) or larger. This wire routes from the vehicle battery to the converter system and must be protected by a 10-amp maximum fuse.
Route the 12 GA black power wire from the vehicle battery location, taking care to avoid pinch points and hot or rotating components. Use a ring terminal for the battery connection. Connect the ring terminal to the positive (+) battery terminal. The white ground wire ring terminal should be attached to the vehicle body using the provided screw (drill a 3/32" hole if necessary). Install the fuse holder with 10-amp fuse after all other steps are complete.
When passing the 12 GA power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a new grommet, or use silicone to protect the power wire from sharp edges.
The maximum fuse rating is 10 amps. The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. Install the fuse after all other installation steps are complete.
Signal circuits (turn signals): 3.0 amps per side. Tail/Running circuits: 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
If necessary, drill a 3/32" hole to attach the white ground wire ring terminal to the vehicle body using the provided screw.
