There are several different types of connectors used to supply power from a tow vehicle's electrical system to a trailer's wiring system. Some trailers only need the bare essentials -- running lights, brake lights and turn signals -- while others require a connection for reverse lights, electric brakes and auxiliary power. With connectors ranging from simple to complex, it may be the case that the connection between your vehicle and your trailer is not a perfect match. For example, your truck may be equipped with a 6-way round socket, but your trailer may have a 4-way flat plug. For this very common problem, CURT offers a quick and simple solution in the form of an electrical adapter. An adapter is an electrical device that allows a connection to be made between a mismatched trailer plug and vehicle socket. It easily plugs in your vehicle's electrical socket and usually requires no additional wiring. CURT offers an array of adapters to accommodate most types of plugs and sockets, including 4-way flat, 4-way round, 5-way flat, 6-way round, 7-way RV blades and more. This electrical adapter is designed to adapt a CURT RV harness with 4-way flat output to fit a 6-way round. It is particularly intended for use in flat towing and dinghy towing to equip the dinghy vehicle with a 6-way round connector. It plugs in under the hood of the towed vehicle and allows for flexible mouting vs. traditional welded connector brackets. It is constructed from quality plastic and requires some splicing. All CURT wiring and electrical products come with a one-year limited warranty to give you the assurance you need to tow with confidence.

Part 58981 is a Curt Manufacturing 6-way RV harness connector mounting kit designed to mount a 6-way plug connector to the front bumper area of a vehicle for flat towing an RV. It includes a connector socket mounting bracket, ring terminal, screw for ground attachment, and a 4-flat dust cover.
The 6-way plug can be mounted in the grill area, in the bumper cover, or below the bumper. You must determine the mounting location before installation and check that ground clearance is adequate to prevent the wiring from contacting the road or debris.
You may need to remove the bumper cover to make the cuts required to accept the 6-way connector and to install the harness and/or mounting kit. This depends on your chosen mounting location and vehicle design.
Required tools include: ratchet, socket, socket extension, wrench, cutting tool, Torx bit, Phillips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, panel trim removal tool, wire crimper, wire stripper, paint marker, heat gun, and electrical tape. Tools may vary based on your vehicle.
The connector socket mounting bracket is mounted to the vehicle body using short screws as a backing plate. If mounting through the bumper cover, use long screws to sandwich the bumper cover between the connector socket and the bracket.
Locate a suitable grounding point on the vehicle body that is free of rust, dirt, and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw. Ensure the connection is clean and tight.
The blunt-cut blue wire is the active trailer brake wire. It is used for hard-wiring braking systems in your flat towed vehicle. You must check your state's DMV requirements on trailer brakes before connecting this wire.
The black wire provides 12-volt power for attaching to a battery maintainer.
Route the harness to your custom RV harness and connect the 4-flat connector. Refer to the installation instructions included with your RV harness for specific routing and connection details.
Before operating, verify that the harness is functioning by attaching the battery and testing with a test light, 4-flat tester, or a functioning trailer. Ensure all items removed during installation are reinstalled, and reconnect the negative battery terminal if it was disconnected. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Do not exceed the product rating or your tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Consult your vehicle's owner manual and the product documentation for specific capacity ratings.
Yes. Keep the wiring away from hot areas and moving objects such as radiators, oil coolers, and fans (both electric and engine-mounted). Also check ground clearance to ensure the wiring does not contact the road or debris.
Perform periodic inspection of all wires and connections to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. Keep connections clean and dry, and use the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
The 58981 is a universal 6-way connector mounting kit for front bumper installation on RV flat towing vehicles. Fitment depends on your vehicle's bumper design and available mounting space. Consult your vehicle's manual or contact Curt Manufacturing for specific vehicle compatibility.
Yes. You must use a suitable cutting tool to make an opening in the vehicle to accept the 6-way connector. You may also need to drill holes for the mounting bracket screws, depending on your mounting location.
Essential tools include a cutting tool, ratchet, socket, wrench, wire crimper, wire stripper, screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead), and electrical tape. A heat gun and paint marker are also recommended.
The manual does not explicitly require battery disconnection before installation. However, it states that if the battery was disconnected at the beginning of installation, you must reconnect the negative terminal after completing all steps.
After connecting the 12-volt power wire to the harness, verify function by attaching the battery and testing with a test light, 4-flat tester, or a functioning trailer.
The kit includes a connector socket mounting bracket, ring terminal, screw for ground attachment, and a 4-flat dust cover. Refer to your product documentation for a complete parts list.
