The CURT 16320 is a 5th wheel hitch designed to couple a trailer kingpin to a tow vehicle equipped with base rails. It features spring-loaded jaws, an adjustable height range of 13" to 17" from truck bed to skid plate top, and an integrated wear plate system. It has a gross trailer weight capacity of 30,000 lbs and a vertical load capacity of 7,500 lbs.
The CURT 16320 is designed for tow vehicles equipped with base rails. The manual states that if installing new base rails, you must follow the rail manufacturer's instructions for proper placement, alignment and spacing per your vehicle's year, make and model. If mounting to existing base rails, alignment may require loosening and realigning the base rails. Consult the base rail manufacturer or CURT for specific vehicle compatibility.
Yes. The 16320 mounts to base rails on the tow vehicle. The hitch legs align with slots in the base rails and are secured with four 1/2" rail mounting pins and clips. If new base rails are being installed, follow the rail manufacturer's instructions. If mounting to existing base rails, ensure they are parallel and properly aligned before installation.
The typical clearance between the truck bed rails and the trailer should be a minimum of 5-1/2" to prevent interference during coupling and uncoupling.
The CURT 16320 has a gross trailer weight (GTW) capacity of 30,000 lbs and a vertical load capacity of 7,500 lbs. Never exceed these limits, and never exceed the towing capacity of any component of your towing system or your vehicle.
Follow these steps: (1) Place the trailer on a firm, level surface with chock blocks in front and behind the tires. Extend the front trailer lifting jacks and adjust to set the trailer at or near level. (2) Measure from the ground to under the trailer's kingpin box skid plate or lube plate. (3) Measure from the ground to the truck bed surface. (4) Subtract the kingpin measurement from the truck bed measurement. This value is your height requirement. The 16320 is adjustable from 13" to 17" in 1.25" increments by selecting the appropriate holes when attaching the legs to the main body.
The following tools are required: ratchet, torque wrench, and socket set. A torque wrench is essential to properly tighten fasteners to specification (M8 bolts to 16 ft-lbs, M14 bolts to 100 ft-lbs, and 16mm head pivot bolts to 175 ft-lbs).
The kit includes: 1 main body/head assembly, 2 leg weldments, 1 handle assembly, 1 handle lock bar, 2 M8 button head cap screws (1.25" x 30), 2 M8 lock washers, 1 latch spring, 4 M14 hex bolts, 4 M14 lock washers, 4 M14 flat washers, 4 M14 nylock nuts, 4 base rail mounting clips, and 4 base rail mounting pins (1/2" diameter).
Assembly proceeds in this order: (1) Loosely attach the leg weldments to the main body/head assembly using the M14 hex bolts, lock washers, flat washers, and nylock nuts, selecting the appropriate holes for your required height. (2) Check that the base rails in your truck are properly installed and parallel. (3) Assemble the handle to the head by sliding the handle assembly over the handle mount bar, inserting the latch spring, and installing the two M8 cap screws and lock washers. (4) Lower the 5th wheel into the base rails, aligning the four tabs on the legs with the slots in the rails. (5) Secure with the four 1/2" rail mounting pins and clips. (6) Torque the four M14 hex bolts to 100 ft-lbs.
Yes. The manual states that the head assembly can easily be removed from the main body to further aid installation of the hardware. It may also be easier to position the 5th wheel hitch assembly and lower it into the rails with the center head section removed to reduce weight.
Place the head upside down on a flat surface. Slide the handle assembly over the end of the handle mount bar. Insert the latch spring into the slot on the handle mount bar and compress slightly. Lift the first M8 cap screw and lock washer into position behind the spring and finger tighten into the threaded hole on the handle lock bar. Pull back on the lock bar to compress the spring further and align the second hole. Install the second M8 cap screw and lock washer through the handle assembly and into the second threaded hole on the lock bar. Rotate the head to vertical and torque both M8 bolts to 16 ft-lbs. Insert the safety lynch pin to lock the handle in the tow position.
M8 bolts (the handle assembly cap screws) must be torqued to 16 ft-lbs.
M14 hex bolts (the leg mounting bolts) must be torqued to 100 ft-lbs. These bolts must be torqued before each use and every 1,000 miles, with a re-torque after the initial 500 miles.
The two 16mm head pivot bolts must be torqued to 175 ft-lbs. These bolts must be checked and torqued before each use and every 1,000 miles.
The manual does not mention battery disconnection as a requirement for installation of the 16320 hitch itself. However, if electrical harnesses are being connected to the trailer, follow the harness manufacturer's instructions.
The manual does not indicate that drilling is required for the 16320 installation to the base rails. However, it does note that if installing new base rails, you must follow the rail manufacturer's instructions, which may include drilling. The manual also states to "check for obstructions before drilling" when examining base rail bolt holes, suggesting that drilling may be involved in base rail installation or adjustment.
Before coupling, you must: (1) Use wheel chocks in front of and behind all trailer tires (do not substitute with stones or wood blocks). (2) Ensure the tow vehicle is stationary with automatic transmission in park (manual in neutral), emergency brake applied, and engine off. (3) Extend the front trailer lifting jacks and adjust so the trailer's kingpin skid plate is approximately 1/2" below the top surface of the 5th wheel's skid plate lead-in ramp. (4) Stop the tow vehicle when the trailer's skid plate is approximately 4" from the 5th wheel's skid plate. (5) Never position yourself or others under the trailer's kingpin area during coupling.
The yellow indicator (triangle) on the handle means the 5th wheel is in the coupled position and ready to couple the trailer. The jaws should be open and unobstructed. If the yellow indicator is visible and the jaws are open, the 5th wheel is ready to couple.
The green indicator (circle) on the handle means the jaws are closed and locked. If the green indicator is visible, the jaws must be unlocked before coupling. Remove the safety latch pin, pull the handle out about 1/2", and swing it back toward the front of the tow vehicle until it latches in the unlocked position. The yellow indicator should then be visible.
The red indicator (octagon) means the jaws are unlocked but the handle is latched in the unlock position. Do not tow in this configuration—the jaws will close but will not lock. This indicates the jaws are unable to fully open and reset to the yellow couple position. Follow the troubleshooting steps on page 6 to reset the operating handle to the couple position before attempting to tow.
After coupling, you must: (1) Visually confirm the trailer's skid plate is resting completely on the head of the 5th wheel. (2) Confirm the jaws are locked around the trailer's kingpin (no gap should be visible). (3) Insert the safety pin through the locking handle to ensure it cannot be unlocked while towing. (4) Never tow without visually ensuring the kingpin is properly coupled and the safety pin has been installed.
The pull test must be performed after coupling and prior to removing trailer wheel blocks and/or raising front trailer jacks. Set the towing vehicle in a forward gear and lightly tug on the trailer to ensure 100% coupling has taken place. If resistance is felt, release forward pressure, set the vehicle to park (automatic) or neutral (manual), and activate the emergency brake. If no resistance is felt, the trailer may not be coupled correctly. Do not continue applying forward pressure. Stop immediately and back the towing vehicle into its original position. Do not allow the truck and trailer to separate. Review coupling instructions, apply corrective action, and repeat the coupling steps.
When coupled, the gap between the trailer skid plate and the 5th wheel skid plate should be minimal and no more than 1/16". Creating a gap is not necessary or recommended. Excessive gap while coupled can damage internal components of the 5th wheel hitch and trailer components.
When uncoupling: (1) Park on a firm, level surface. Set automatic transmission to park and activate emergency brake; set manual transmission to neutral and activate emergency brake. (2) Chock the trailer wheels with multiple wheel chocks in front and behind (do not substitute with stones or wood blocks). (3) Disconnect all harnesses, lanyards, and safety devices. (4) Lower or remove the truck tailgate as required. (5) Extend the front trailer lifting jacks just enough to remove the weight of the trailer from the 5th wheel skid plate. (6) Never position yourself or others under the trailer's kingpin area during uncoupling.
Before towing, you must: (1) Confirm the handle safety latch pin has been installed. (2) Attach electrical harnesses. (3) Attach lanyard and insert electric brake break-away plunger (if equipped). If hydraulic surge brakes are present, attach lanyard from the surge brake assembly as required. (4) Fully retract front trailer lifting jacks. (5) Close or reinstall the truck tailgate. (6) Remove tire chock blocks. (7) Check running lights, directional signals, and brake lights for proper operation. (8) Pull forward a few feet and apply brakes to check that trailer brakes are activating. Adjust the electric brake controller if necessary. (9) Perform the pull test.
Inspect the integrated wear plates before each use and every 1,000 miles. The wear plates are located on the skid plate's top surface. When the grooves have worn flush, they should be replaced (CURT# 19269). Alternatively, you may use a lube plate installed on your trailer's kingpin (CURT# 16722) to further reduce wear.
Lubricate the center pivot point before each use. Remove the center pivot pin and apply a light coating of high-pressure wheel bearing grease. Replace the pin and ensure it is secured with the safety lynch pin.
Lubricate the locking pawl before each use. Open the jaws and apply a small amount of grease to the curved surface of the locking pawl. The pawl will be accessible through the operating handle opening in the head side plate.
Lubricate the jaw pivot points every 3,000 miles. Use a grease gun to apply grease to both zerks located on the front of each jaw. The jaws must be in the closed and locked position for the zerks to be accessible.
Lubricate the linkage pivot points before each use. Use an aerosol applicator to spray a small amount of rust inhibitor or lubricant on the lock handle, linkage bar, and pawl pivot points.
Lubricate the head pivot points every 3,000 miles. Use a grease gun to apply grease to both zerks located on both sides of the head.
Clean the 5th wheel hitch after each use and before long-term storage. For optimal service life, clean with warm soapy water and dry with towels or compressed air. It is recommended that the 5th wheel be removed from the vehicle or covered when not in use for extended periods. Spray exposed surfaces with a light coat of rust inhibitor before long-term storage.
Torque the four M14 leg hex bolts to 100 ft-lbs before each use and every 1,000 miles. Re-torque after the initial 500 miles and every 1,000 miles thereafter.
If the kingpin is resting on top of the jaws, immediately lower the trailer jacks to lift the kingpin off the jaws. Inspect the 5th wheel for damage that may have resulted from the improper coupling attempt. Do not use the 5th wheel unit if damage exists. If no damage exists, review the coupling instructions and repeat the procedure.
Do not tow in this configuration. The red indicator signifies that the jaws are unlocked and the operating handle is latched in the unlock position, but the jaws are unable to fully open and reset to the yellow couple position. Follow these steps: (1) Check for signs of damage to the locking mechanism. Ensure the jaws are open and the indicator, jaw, handle, and torsion springs are all attached and undamaged. If any springs are missing or damaged, do not use the hitch until repaired. (2) Ensure the locking mechanism is free of excessive dirt, rust, grease, snow, ice, or other foreign material. Clean with warm soapy water and lightly lubricate exposed surfaces with rust inhibitor. (3) If cycling the handle is unsuccessful, apply pressure to the front of the jaw to manually reset the locking pawl. (4) If all components are undamaged and can freely move, apply pressure to the operating handle as if unlocking and release. If the handle drops to the couple position and the indicator turns yellow, you are ready to couple.
If the handle will not latch in the unlocked position, refer to the troubleshooting section on page 6. Check for signs of damage to the locking mechanism, ensure the jaws are open and all springs are attached and undamaged, and ensure the locking mechanism is free of excessive dirt, rust, grease, snow, ice, or other foreign material. Clean with warm soapy water and lightly lubricate with rust inhibitor. If cycling the handle is unsuccessful, apply pressure to the front of the jaw to manually reset the locking pawl. Do not attempt to couple your trailer until this issue is resolved.
If resistance is encountered when uncoupling, determine the corrective action and repeat the uncoupling steps. Ensure that the trailer jacks have been extended just enough to remove the weight of the trailer from the 5th wheel skid plate, and that you have backed the tow vehicle up slightly and pushed the kingpin completely into the opening on the 5th wheel head before attempting to drive out from under the trailer.
If no resistance is felt during the pull test, the trailer may not be coupled correctly. Do not continue applying forward pressure. Stop immediately and back the towing vehicle into its original position. Do not allow the truck and trailer to separate, as separation can cause damage to the towing vehicle, 5th wheel hitch, and/or trailer, and may result in serious injury or death. Review the coupling instructions, apply corrective action, and repeat the coupling steps.
